carrying long stuff on your back

Is there a conventional wisdom in carrying something fairly long slung over your back? I have a location shoot to do tomorrow. I can net the camera bag on the passenger seat of my GS, but the tripod bag won't quite strap down nicely (lack of straps - I can fix that but not right now). The padded tripod bag does have a built-in shoulder strap so I could sling it over my shoulder and ride that way. While it didn't feel too awkward, it is about an hour ride over both freeway and dirt to the location. I could leave it at home and shoot handheld, but want the option of using the sticks. Thankfully the boom, lav, and other necessities fit in the camera bag.

Not saying I haven't done it (slung a shotgun across my back when deer hunting), but the downside is if you go down whatever you're wearing might be the implement of your death.

If it's a tripod bag, why not strap it across the seat so it sticks out a foot or two on either side of the bike?

I used to ride my bike to band practice and just slung my bass across my back. I had to take a little bit of freeway to get there, and the higher speeds kinda caught the neck like a sail and made for some weird turbulence. So the next time I really torqued down the strap to keep it from moving around. I was ok, but as soon as I stopped the bike, the strap broke and my bass fell flat on the ground. That sucked, but I was just glad it didn't happen on the freeway!

After that, I swore off wearing anything on my back while riding. What sucks is that it seems ok in the garage, but you never know how it's going to feel until you get up to speed, and at that point you'll probably be inclined to just "go for it" regardless.

I only carry a back pack I always tie everything else on my rack or I put my fly rod on my mirrors. I put it across them and use zip ties. I ride mainly dirt roads going to any fishing holes and my pole has never came off, and if I would take a spill they would not be on me. Just my 2 cents worth. ATP

Getarope!

Then a Boy Scout Handbook to learn a few knots. You'll never need a strap or bungie again. I always carry a few lengths of small diameter, synthetic rope in the topcase. Usually leave it unlocked. Nobody steals cheap rope and it's far more adaptable and secure than a strap or bungie...if you know your knots.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to take the top box off and strap both camera bag and tripod to the back seat and that platform, and move the stuff in the top box (tools, water, extra bits, etc) to side bags. Rope is a good idea too...if anyone on set pisses me off I can tie them up and leave them there for awhile.

I'm afraid an ultrapod isn't going to hold a Canon XHA1 at 6' off the ground

Anyone know a good way to carry a golf bag?

Wasn't there a post about that recently?

If ya gotta do it

Secure the ass end: bungie or something. And ride mostly one handed securing the part that's not so secured......I've Done it. Do not ride in rush hour traffic. Use your knees as needed. Your on a mission, don't fuck up.

Not a sugestion for carrying long stuff, and not quite 6' off the ground, but I fitted a tripod head to a RAM mount, so I can take off the GPSr mount and fit the camera mount to use the bike as a tripod.

I need a way to carry a 6' or 7' fishing rod on my bike...anyone have any elegant solutions? (It's a one-piece so I can't break it down and zip tie to mirrors...)
