CDI unit repair????

My little bike that could....(86 TT225s) that has taken me all over the deserts of Nevada is acting up. I had a mechanic friend look at it and he things it's the CDI unit going bad. It still runs but loses spark from time to time. For a new CDI unit it’s close to $300.00. Now that I have a BRP I don’t’ know if it’s worth the money. I would like it for my wife’s bike… So Has anyone ever heard of having the CDI units fixed??? I know there are some electronic geeks out there that understand how these things work, and what makes then tick…..Lets hear from you

Imho a CDI works, or it doesn't. I'd check the coil and the wiring first, especially the HT leads. have you already changed anything to rule this out?

I just checked the wiring contacts, looking for any that were loose. Checked the kill switch, and added a "jumper" to removed it. Still no answers. I hope it's not the CDI...How do you test the Coil???

I have an '86 TT225 that had a defective cdi unit that appeared to be a carb problem. I finally proved it bad by swapping cdi units with a friend who has an identical bike. I also thought it worked or it didn't but in this case sometimes it was ok but then it wasn't, losing power, surging, missing. I replaced the cdi and now it runs great. Bike Bandit lists an oem cdi unit for $227 (10% off for AMA members).

Trander you hit the nail on the head....I brought it in to get the carb tuned because I thought that what it was. The mechanic informed me that is was losing spark from time to time. He put the idea in my head about the C.D.I. unit. It's such a great lite little bike that I think I'll spend the money. Even sick I'll take it for a 60 miler this weekend.

Some times I think I spend more time and money by attempting to half ass a fix then just fixing it right the first time!!

CDIs can definitely develop intermittent issues. Happened to me with my XR650L.
