Thank you Scotty. We'll have to drink to our Fathers next time we see each other.
My Dad was 17 in 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He decided that day that he was going to serve. The day after graduating from high school, 6 months later, my dad and THOUSANDS of young Americans went down to the recruiter and signed up. A boaty person, my Dad chose the USCG. Very soon after that he was in the Mediterranean supporting the war against the Germans.
He was on a relatively small vessel. A U boat fired a torpedo at my Dad's boat, and the aim was good. At the last moment the torpedo broke the surface and pierced the hull midships above the waterline and did not detonate until it was in the cargo hold. The boat did not go down, but my Father lost many fiends and his youth that day.
He has been gone for 20 years, but I will say Semper Paratus to all in his honor.
You may see me wearing USCG items. I do so to honor all the men and women who have sacrificed so much.

My uncle was career Coast Guard, and had several boats under his command. The painting below was done in his honor:

Two of his daughters married into the USCG family, both aviators (rescue helicopters). Altho' both performed some heroic rescues, one was honored for one in particular:

He is on the left with his crew:

My dad never served in the active service. He was exempt because he was a research chemist and went to work for a company contracted by the government. His expertise had him developing specialized detonators for artillary shells.

EDIT: I can't leave out my dad's other brother. He was also exempt from active service since he worked at the David Taylor Research Center (Basin) doing hull design research for Navy submarines and ships.

And finally, my grand-dad served in the Spanish American War. His name appeared on a memorial poster dedicated to those from West Virginia who served in that conflict:
