After picking up the marker, Andrew & Charles Lewis March, I remained on Rt 41 and went to Babcock. You can pick up a bag of freshly grounded meal!

Camp Washington Carver - Fayette Co

Located near Clifftop - CR 11/3 off of CR 11/4.

Camp Washington-Carver is a beautiful retreat listed on the National Register of Historic Places. More than 10,000 people attended events this year at the camp, which serves as the state's mountain cultural arts center. Each season features events chosen to preserve the arts and traditions of yesterday while perpetuating those of today. The facility nurtures the cultural heritage embodied in the site since its dedication in 1942 as a 4-H camp for West Virginia's African-American youth. Programs like the African-American Heritage Arts Camp and the Appalachian String Band Festival, along with the camp's Great Chestnut Lodge, the largest log structure of its kind in the world, make this site a favorite place for Mountain State festivities.

Historical Marker located in front of the main building.

Nallen / Wilderness Lumber Company - Fayette Co

Located on Rt 41 at the Nicholas Co / Greenbrier Co line, about 15-20 miles south of Summersville.

The one interesting fact that jumped out at me was that they used white oak lumber from this mill to restore the USS Consitution (Old Ironsides) several years ago.

To read more about this historical ship: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Constitution

Historical Marker located on Rt 41 in Nallen, just south of the Nicholas Co / Greenbrier Co line.

Same Marker - Side #2.

View southbound on Rt 41.

There is still an active lumber mill just across the highway.

Jackson's Mother - Fayette Co

Julia Beckwith (née Neale) Jackson (1798-1831) was the mother of Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. She died at the age of 33 from childbirth complications on Dec 4, 1831. The family lived in and around what is now Ansted, WV, where she was buried without a marker in Westlake Cemetery. A historian wrote later that neighbors wrapped her wasted body in a homemade coffin.

Historical Marker is located on Rt 60 in Ansted. Please note: in the Wikipedia article, the marker is shown at the bottom of the hill below the cemetery.

Historical Marker located in front of these nice gentlemen's barber shop on Rt 60 in Ansted. They pointed me to the cemetery and gravesite. Too bad I didn't need a haircut, or I would have stopped in.

Just up the street to the north of the sign is the cemetery. Mrs Jackson's grave is at the top of the hill to the left.

Gravesite.

Grave stone.

Salt Sand - Fayette Co

Located in the parking lot of the Hawk's Nest Lodge on the south side of Rt 60, just west of Ansted.

When you stand at an overlook in the New River Gorge, you notice the steep canyon walls and sandstone cliffs that characterize the area. The V-shaped canyon of the New River is an outstanding natural feature of West Virginia. It was caused by erosion that has occurred over a very long period of time, forming the cliffs and canyon walls. You can see the ongoing effects of erosion in the large rocks and slides that have tumbled from the cliffs and down into the river.
The gorge cuts through the Appalachian Plateau, and exposes 3200 feet of very old rocks. Most of the rocks that you can see exposed in the gorge are sandstone and shale. In the lower gorge, the New River cuts through the hard Nuttall sandstone, a unique sandstone type that is 98% quartz. The area of the lower gorge around Batoff Mountain is one of the best exposures of sandstone in the area; these rocks are among the oldest found in the gorge.

Hawk's Nest / Hawk's Nest Tunnel Sidaster - Fayette Co

Just Go already posted these back in Post #32, but since I was there, I wanted to see it again. It's been about 3 years since I've been through here. Both markers are located at the Hawk's Nest Overlook turnout and path to the overlook.

Marker #1 in the parking lot/turnout by Rt 60, about 3 miles west of Ansted. GREAT riding just west of this area for about 5 miles.

View of Marker #1 looking westbound on Rt 60.

Marker #2 on the path to the overlook.

View of Marker #2 from the path.

Coming out to the overlook.

View down the river. Hawk's Nest Tunnel comes out on the right not too far from the dam.
