Mercer county from this morning in a few.
Thanks for the nice additions. Good photos and writeups.

"Maximum Speed - 94.9 MH" Did you take a detour to look for markers on the autobahn?

We were stationed in Germany for 3 years. Our car probably has more "100 MPH+ miles" than most of the State Trooper Crown Vics on the road.

It's either one of two things.

1. Your quote literally "-94.9mph" with the ABS in action over a blown marker.

or

2. The Garmin Gremlin

Martha would have torn my jacket off if that was the truth.

I'm sure glad that my strategic planning included a shelter this morning.

It's gonna pass through, nothing to worry about.

Not a good day for county counting. We wait about 30 minutes in the very forces that created this.

A different manufacturer?

O how I long for an elevator ride at Montgomery Ward, or a walk through the candy isle in Kresge's, or to see Al Land stand on his head. Maybe they have all of that in here?

pnoman,

Can you explain the coding you are using for the missing markers (i.e. confirmed vs presumed). Martha and I are considering a post hunt.

Missing markers

I just recently started making the "Confirmed Missing" markers bold print and red on the spreadsheet. Not all are changed over yet. It's one of those things I wish I would have thought of earlier on, because I was taking "Missing" at face value. Turns out a lot of the MIAs are back from the dead, whereas some are really gone.

Please let me know of any "Confirmed missing".

Bottom line: If it was originally marked "Missing" on the last survey, and is still missing, I'm going to put it in bold print and red.

Also, there are a few new markers or ones that were not on the previous list. I've put the whole entry (Post #, Rider, Location, etc) in red to highlight it.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks again.

Latest Marker Count - Spreadsheet Update

Latest Update to Spreadsheet - Current to 23 Aug 2009 / Post # 803

TOTAL NUMBER OF MARKERS DOCUMENTED - 612 !!!

Something new I am doing - Any markers that are confirmed "Missing" will be listed in red/bold. If you come across any that are missing (and are not red/bold on the spreadsheet), please let me know so we can also document those for replacement. Thanks!!!

Possible error?

Have not had the chance to visit this thread for a few days.

One of my daughters attended WVU and her husband is a native of WV so I enjoy reading about your beautiful state. My wife & I will be making a short trip there in a few weeks (by car, sadly).

I did notice one possible error: in post #785 concerning the Civil War Monument the marker says it was dedicated 8-21-1901 and that 10,000 people heard a speech by Gen. John Echols but the marker for Gen. Echols (post #787) indicates he died on 5-24-1896. A quick "google" search seems to confirm that date of death is correct.

Thank you for your interest and critical reading. I thought it strange also. I think his son Edward gave the speech in 1901. But, read this and tell me what you think.

Yes, it would seem Edward was the speaker. Thank you for the link.

The style of writing in that article was also interesting.

Aug 28/29 Itinerary - Charleston

OK, ladies and gentlemen, here is the 1st draft of an itinerary for this weekend. I'm open to suggestions, but I'd like to have it finalized by Wednesday at noon. The tour time and photo time are set - Mr Geiger is driving in from Huntington to be our host.

Here goes:

Friday Aug 28 -

Noon to ????? Check in at Kanawha State Forest Campgrounds. Look for a group of bikes (duhhh) or my "PNOMAN" sign that I'll post if we're out marker hunting. Paul (the campground manager) said we could go 2 tents per site.

4 pm - Let's ride! From the campground, we'll pick a loop south, maybe around Logan or anywhere interesting. Plan on 2hrs.

6:30 pm - Depart from the Campground for dinner somewhere around Charleston. Ask around for BBQ or good road-food joint. We'll come back to the campground after dinner and see who can tell the biggest lies .

Saturday Aug 29 -

8:30 am - Depart campground for breakfast. (May not have time to return before tour and photos).

8:45 am - 9:45 Breakfast at Tudors (sp?) Biscuit World. Located off I-64 [EDIT: Exit 100 - Broad St south to Quarrier St]

10:00 am - Tour Starts (Please try to be there a few minutes early). WV Culture Center Museum. Off I-64 Exit 99, go to first light (Washington Ave) and turn LEFT (East) into parking area for Capitol Complex. Turn RIGHT at the guard shack and park by the Culture Center. Walk around front and meet inside the entrance in the "Great Hall". Mr Geiger is going to give us a personal tour of the Museum. This should take about 60-90 minutes, then allows a few minutes for potty stops before photos.

11:45 am. Depart Museum for Capitol. For those just arriving for the photos, take I-64 Exit 99, go all the way south to Kanawha Blvd (about 1/2 mile) then turn left. It's the big building with the big gold dome on top .

12:00 Noon - Meet on the south Capitol Steps (facing Kanawha Blvd and the Kanawha River). We will line the bikes up along the bottom step for the big photo shot. After that, we will walk over to the Historical Marker across the street for a group photo (without bikes - not enough room).

I have a few things planned (awards) before we head out to lunch. We'll plan on riding out somewhere for lunch (again, I'm open to suggestions from those who are familiar with the Charleston area). After lunch, it' s homeward bound (unless any of you all plan activities on your own).

*************

Again, this is the first draft, Version 1.0.0.0 Stay tuned for "improvements".

RATHER THAN POST INFORMATION IN TWO PLACES, LET'S POST ALL NOTES ABOUT THIS WEEKEND'S GATHERING ON THE "CALLING ALL WV MARKERS RIDERS...." THREAD. THANKS!
