Ida L. Reed - Barbour Co

Located on Rt 250/119 about 4 miles north of Philippi at the junction with CR 6.

On November 30, 1865, Ida L. Reed was born near Moatsville, Barbour County. She published over 2,000 Christian hymns and wrote an autobiography, My Life Story. Her best-known hymn is "I Belong to the King".

I BELONG TO THE KING
Words by Ida L. Reed. Music by Maurice A Clifton.

I belong to the King, I'm a child of His love,
I shall dwell in His palace so fair;
For He tells of its bliss in yon heaven above,
And His children its splendors shall share.

CHORUS:
I belong to the King, I'm a child of His love,
And He never forsaketh His own;
He will call me some day to His palace above,
I shall dwell by His glorified throne.

I belong to the King, and He loves me I know,
For His mercy and kindness, so free,
Are unceasingly mine, wheresoever I go,
And my refuge unfailing is He.

CHORUS
I belong to the King, and His promise is sure,
That we all shall be gathered at last
In His kingdom above, by life's waters so pure,
When this life with its trials is past.

Looking southbound on Rt 250/119. Main highway is to the right. Across the highway, CR 6 turns off toward the homestead and cemetery.

View northbound on Rt 250/119. Turnoff for CR 6 is to the right. The homestead is back about 3 miles from the highway. Go until the 2-lane narrows at a "T" intersection and bear right. Go another mile to the next fork in the road and bear left. The church and cemetery are about 1/4 mile on the left.

Gravesite (inside white fence) and church.

A local man told me that her home down the road was burned down (vandalism probably) about 10 years ago. I could not find any traces of it.

West Virginia College - Taylor Co

Located east of Flemington near Simpson on CR 13. This area apparently used to be called "College Hill" and was later absorbed into the greater Flemington Metropolitan Area (population 287).

I could not find any more information about the WV College than is written on the marker. If I do, I will come back and edit.

It was interesting how I got the photo of the school. I was trying to find a missing marker, "Flemington", and was directed to an older gentleman (Mr Welch) who gave me some directions around town, along with bits of wisdom and history garnered from his 80+ years on this earth. I never did find the Flemington marker, but he showed me a photo of the WV College which is near his home. I asked him if I could take a photo of his 8X10 photo and he said yes. Nice man, and probably could talk for days about the area. He invited me back, and I may take him up on it when I have LOTS of time to sit and talk.

Historical Marker located along CR 13 about 1 mile east of Flemington.

Same marker - Side #2

View eastbound on CR 13. The college was to the right before it burned down. I did not photograph toward that direction since it is now an Elementary School, and I think they would worry about a strange motorcyclist coming up and taking pictures of the kids in the playground.

Photo of the original building - used as the High School in later years. Mr Welch is one of the students in the photo. This photo was in a frame on his living room table.

I again enlist the wonderful services of the lovely and talented Martha. We make a run through the high class hillbilly county. But first, we need to do a little clean up work. We missed this one the last time through.

It's about 2 tenths out Seminole.

He was wounded and taken prisoner at Hatcher's Run in 1865. General Gordon offered 50 Federal prisoners for his release. He was buried here at Forest Hill.

That's lichen on the East facing side of the marker.

It is an absolutely beautiful ride across Kate's Mountain(dirt). The TWVT uses it as part of the route. And get this contrast, you run right into The Greenbrier parking lot when you intersect 60.

Vanna has got nothing on this girl. I present Martha, performing the nearly impossible two markers at once.

I'll get to the separate posts in a minute.
