Just like the master list says, well kinda sorta, only part of it is missing.

But we did find out what the neighbors have to say about us.

They traveled 160 miles in 48 hours. I safely assume that was without a GPS.

That is bullet holes in the marker, and one pretty good grouping I might add. The post has taken a couple of hits too.

And again, the nearly impossible.

Separate posts after breakfast.

Harrison County - Upshur Co

Yes, you read that correctly. There is a marker for Harrison County smack dab in the middle of Upshur County. Read on.

This was one of the most fun (funnest??) times I've had photographing a marker. It all started with the directions - Old Rt 33, Island Avenue, Buckhannon. Well, I looked all up and down the little sections of Old Rt33 that parallel the new 4-lane, with no luck. Finally, in a moment of inspiration (I still get those, even though I'm 51 ), I decided to stop by the Dept of Highways office just outside of Buckhannon. That's where the fun begins.

I entered the main office and the secretary directed me to one of the younger managers, who started to listen to my explanation when THE DOOR opened. Out comes "Boss Hawg" - the know-it-all old man who has been the boss here FOREVER and knows EVERYTHING!

The conversation goes something like this:

BOSS HAWG - Whatcha' lookin' for? I know where EVERYTHING is in this county.

ME - I'm looking for an historical marker named "Harrison County" that....

BOSS HAWG - THERE AIN'T NO HARRISON COUNTY MARKERS HERE. This is Upshur County, son. Harrison County is up the road at Clarksburg.

ME - Yes, sir, I was born and raised in Clarksburg, and I am well aware of where Harrison County is, and where it ends. Now, this WV handbook lists a marker named Harrison County somewhere here around Buckhannon.

BOSS HAWG - SON, AIN'TCHA LISTENING TO ME? I said there are NO HARRISON COUNTY MARKERS IN THIS TOWN. This is Upshur County. Are ya' listenin' to me?

ME - Can you tell me where Old Rt 33, Island Ave, is located?

BOSS HAWG - (Giving directions with "Are you listenin'?" between every breath) It's past Zick's restaurant.

ME - Thank you, sir. I've heard of Zick's. Supposed to be good food.

BOSS HAWG - Lousy food.

ME - Thank you, sir. Bye.

Guess what? There is a Harrison County Marker just 1/2 mile from downtown Buckhannon. Turns out they re-named Old Rt 33 - it's now Rt 151. But it is still Island Avenue for the first mile or so.

Same marker - Side #2.

View westbound on Old Rt 33 (now Rt 151) AKA "Island Ave". Downtown Buckhannon is just 1/2 mile ahead.

View east leaving Buckhannon, heading toward Elkins.

OK, I took this one just to show Boss Hawg the Marker next to an Upshur County school bus stop.

*************

Just by coincidence , I had to go by the Dept of Highways on the way out of town. Part II of the conversation goes like this:

BOSS HAWG - You Back? Didn't find it, did you.

ME - (Looking at the snickering Jr Manager - a really nice guy, by the way) Hey, you want a free lunch at Zick's? Bet your boss there's a Harrison County marker in Buckhannon.

BOSS HAWG - You found one?

ME - Oh, yes sir, I found it, right next to one of your DOH road crews working on a bridge. Hope they don't bump into the pole.

BOSS HAWG - You mean there's a Harrison County marker in Buckhannon? I'll have to have that removed.

ME - I wouldn't do that, sir. I have photos, and I'm sending them to Charleston. (Looking at the Jr Manager) Enjoy your free lunch at Zick's.

BOSS HAWG - I told you the food there is lousy.

ME - Well, sir, you were wrong about the marker. I'm guessing you might be wrong about the restaurant too. Have a nice day.

I could just hear the others peeing their pants laughing. This old coot must have them under his thumb all day long. Poor souls.

Who said Ditch Patrol is boring????

Weekend marker patrol

Looks like I'm going to be a bachelor the next week or so while my wife is in Wisconsin. Sooooo..., I'm going to use a day of vacation and head down to Logan Friday for a long weekend. Planning to start in Logan and Mingo counties and work my way up the Ohio River (Matewan, Williamson, etc) up to Huntington/Barboursville then up to Point Pleasant. Got lots of markers circled on the Gazatteer. Looks like good weather, too (so far).

I'm staying away from Buckhannon for awhile 'til things cool off up there.

Lincoln County

Set out today to log all of the existing Lincoln County markers, the first stop was the Lincoln/Putnam Co. line, it was there a month ago, i swear it was, but now its MIA.....Next stop, Hamlin, the two markers left are only about a half mile from each other, heres the first.........

thats Chickenstrip by the bike, thought I might need some backup..

This marker is in good shape, both sides are good, no cracks or chipped paint.

The next marker is just down the road

This marker has a little more of a weathered look, some cracks are visable and the paint isnt as good,

Roads leading to these markers include, Rt. 10 from the Huntington area leading to Rt3, which follows Coal River all the was past Beckley are both good rides, twisty and senic.

I guess I'm not the only one getting Bruced in this project .

I take the blame, though, 'cause I haven't been doing my homework and updating the spreadsheet. I'm working on it now.

EDIT - Updated through Post #880 / 10 Sept 2009 / Total # of Markers Photographed - 655
