As a consolation prize - We are going to all meet for lunch at Rella's (Rt 20 about a mile south of Hacker Valley - about 15 miles north of Webster Springs) on this Saturday - 22 May 2010 - at 1pm. This will still give everyone a riding destination without having to drag all the wet camping gear hither and thither.

Thanks for your understanding! See you at Rella's on Saturday, and Seneca Rocks in 2 or 3 weeks.
Damnit!!!

Please tell them I said hello.

Ohio County/Marshall County

I found this marker this evening. It is an Ohio County/Marshall County marker located on Route 88 at the county line. It is only about a quarter of a mile past the Walter Reuther marker. I don't see a description on the list for this marker. This is probably because of the previously unlisted marker that I found between Benwood and Wheeling.

The Formerly Missing Jesse Lee Reno Marker

I thought I saw this marker a couple of weeks ago. I went back tonight to check and sure enough, it was there!

Side One:

That's the head of the "Pioneer Mother" monument silhouetted in the background.

Side Two:

Shot from the base of the "Pioneer Mothers" monument. You can see her foot.:

It is was recently re-erected along Route 40 in Woodsdale Section of Wheeling. It is grouped with the "State's Birthplace" and "National Pike" markers.

You'll notice that the wording on this marker was also revised. Something was removed at the end of the last sentence just after "Georgetown. I'll try to find out what. Edit: The word Maryland was removed. Georgetown is considered to be part of Washington, DC.

Rider Gap - Pocahontas County

Located on Rt 39 about 100 feet west of the Virginia state line. Gravel road over old trail runs north and south from the highway.

This marker was missing when I went by here in March of this year.

Historical Marker located on Rt 39 just inside the WV/VA state line - about 20 - 25 miles east of Marlinton WV.

Same Marker - Side #2

View eastbound on Rt 39 - that's Virginia just over the hilltop. The two gravel roads for Rider Gap (AKA Ryder Gap) go to the left (north) and right (south).

This marker wasn't in place last March when I photographed the Bethany Turnpike Tunnels marker. I took a little ride this afternoon to check for it again and what do ya know:

It is right next to the Bethany Turnpike Tunnels marker located on Rt. 67 about mid way between Bethany and wellsburg.

My brother was with me so I got him to snap a pic of me:

This picturesque waterfall is roght across the road from the markers:

Grape Ape,

Thanks for the new additions. The "Missing" list grows smaller and smaller.

Spreadsheet updated to :

Total Markers Documented: 799

Total Markers Remaining: 17 (not counting "Missing" markers that may have recently been replaced) There are also a few of these that I have looked for at great length with no success, including: Fort Ogden (2X) in Grant Co, Indian Battle in Upshur Co, and a few others from other riders.

Please let me know if you see any mistakes/omissions. Thanks!

Took another trip down old Rt. 33. Still can't locate "Indian Battle" marker. It is not listed as missing?

Yes, I've spent several hours looking for that one with no luck. (Post #1213) Intothenew looked for it also (Post #1194) but no luck either. I've been meaning to stop by the DOH office in Weston and talk to them, but haven't found the time during their normal business hours. It's a mystery. Will keep you posted.

Thanks for trying , though. You never know when these "missing" ones are going to suddenly appear.

Seneca Rocks Get-Together

The Spring 2010 WV Tag-O-Rama / Historical Markers Get-Together is this weekend: Fri June 4 thru Sun June 6 at Yokum's Vacationland Campground and Rooms/Cabins just 1/2 mile north of Seneca Rocks (across from the big Columbia Gas Transmission Plant - NOT THE ONE BY THE INTERSECTION/HARPER'S STORE).

Come one - Come all. Great opportunity to tell tales of bravery and cunning - how you grabbed the elusive tag or marker when no-one else could (or would).

I love riding in W.V. and like reading historical markers when I can stop without getting rammed. Maybe I can get down there again this summer. Thanks for the pictures and this thread.

Glad you are enjoying the thread. The guys in Virginia just started a similar one a few weeks ago and it's off to a good start. You might want to check that one out also.

Give us a holler if you're ever down this way.

There was fresh concrete at the base of the pole. I got a tip from two locals that it had "appeared". That felt really good, some community support.

You can have a look at the NRHP application here. There is a photo at the very end of that document. The house is on gated private property, and reported to be in sad shape.
