Laugh Biggest KLR headlights EVER..........Lightforce 170 duals

Goal: BIG visible lights to replace KLR headlight.

Option: Lightforce 170s

So my question is what issues I'd run into (legally or electrically) running a set of 170s (having unplugged the stock light). I am envisioning creating a bracket, and then putting the pair of 170s side-by-side sort of overlapping/covering the stock light.

Electrically, running a 50w bulb in each, and having one set as "Low" beam, and the other to High would keep the draw about at stock (I could also order a 75w for the high). I am picturing running an amber filter to make it (i.e., ME) stand out more during the day.

If you look at the candlelight production from the 170s vs 140s, with an array of bulb powers, you'll see that you get waaaay more from a lower watt bulb w/ the bigger lens. So, that's the reason I am leaning that way. Plus, a pair of them are just about as audacious as it would get on a KLR.

My other thinking is to run the 50w bulbs in both lights BUT to have the Low amber light stay on all the time, and be able to have the other 50w light come on when High beam is hit.

Naysayers unite and share your typed visions of doom.

You'd want to try some different filter lenses to get a proper low beam. You can also adjust them from wide to pencil beam. Not sure if the low beam would be practical. That said I have a pair of 100 watters on my truck. They are near indestructible and are imo perfect driving lights.

Dual 8" race lights. Not cheap but if you go halogen instead of HID it's not to bad. I'm running their single 8".

I like the look of the big 8"ers. The attraction on the LF's is, as posted above, their awesome adjustability w/ filters, dialing lens, and choice of pattern. Wonder what 240s are in diam?

240mm converts to 9.44"

guy i knew had a pair on the front of his Exploder. when he first got 'em, he unscrewed the lens/reflector assembly, put it against the curb and jumped on it. no damage. drove the truck over it, no damage.

Yea, they look big on an FJ80. Maybe a bit bigger than I can go on the KLR.

I think the advantage I am looking at here is getting big light from only 50w bulbs, hence not overtaxing the bike's output. Any reason that won't work?

What year is your bike? I have an 08 and it has a upgraded 17A alternator. If your running 55W halogens I would think that would work.

the size of the lens/reflector doesn't really have any affect on the amount of light, it just makes it easier to shape the beam, lets the reflector and lens run cooler, etc.

if you want LOTS of light for minimal wattage, HID seems the be the answer.

can't use a modulator with HID tho.

for the "triangle of light" there are some LEDs that may work well... you could even modulate the LEDs.

What is the amps on the pre-'08s? I'm thinking Kaw might be real proud of that alternator on the '08. Is it any better than the Electrosport one that has been problem free?
