carnet, R1150 GS adventure 2004

I've scored heaps of good information off all of you, so I thought I contribute some. I know some one out there wants to know how much it is to get their GS into all "those" countries.

This process was not simple, if any one needs help, send me a line and I could probably save you some headaches.

Value of Vehicle:

At time of purchase: $15,200.00 US = $17,600.00Cad

Owner’s value now: $8,260.00 US = $ 9,600.00 Cad

Nada Gold Book Value: $8,260.00, US = $ 9,600.00 Cad

I suggest we value the value at $9,600.00 Canadian X 110% CIF for Mauritania =

Cost $9,600.00
Insurance $ 600.00
Freight $1,000.00
Total 11,200.00 X 110% = $12,320.00 needed as a guarantee

FOR OFFICE USE ONLY

I suggest we price the vehicle at $9,600.00Cad and we need $12,320.00 as a Financial Guaranteeusing a Letter of Credit orwe need $9,062.40 using the Indemnity Bond

the 123s for carnet applications

I'm American, so it costs me more,.. Even though we were the first motorcycle RTW types,.. few of us Americans do it anymore, while the Europeans and Canadians do it everyother week, so the system is refined and setup for them.

1) go to CAA website and read through it and use the cost calculator
http://www.caa.ca/travel/travel-carnet-usa-e.cfm

2) Email Suzzanne Danis- she runs the carnet show for Canada and the US through CAA. She's pretty good, but double check your paper work when it comes, there's significant room for human error.

3) Try to get your bank to post a gaurantee,... good luck, after hours and hours of telephone time my banks either didnt do it, or it was insanely expensive. I get the impression strait edge banker types arent much impressed by our risky endeavors, and would just assume not do bussines wiht us. Was cheapest for me to simply suck it up and post the amount with a wire transfer. I ultimately lose about $1,000 over CAA processing fees over a two year period (550 for one year). The rest of the money will be returned when I no longer need the carnet--- ie finish with Africa- use carnet money to get myself home through Europe, Iceland, Canada.

4) It was cheapest for me to wire American dollars to their bank, There bank had a far better exchange rate then the US banks. you will know your commited after making payment like that!

let me know if I can help with anything else

Did they tell you how long it takes to get your money back?

Hey Farfetch,

Great info. What route are you looking at?

Quick comment, you may already know, but you mentioned something about
using the deposit money to get yourself back home after Africa. Before they refund your cash, will need to get the carnet stamped by USA customs to show that is has come home so you'll have to have the bike shipped home first.

Mrs Dannis would not specify, but said its only a matter of the carnet being returned to CAA, then the currency being wired. My planning factor is one month to play it safe.

Actually I think you'll find your carnet rates VERY reasonable. For example a UK registered vehicle costs 800% to get into Egypt and most other Euro countries 100-200% for Egypt. Just an example, but generally the US rates are almost the best there are.

Congrats on getting it though - definitely the biggest paperwork ball-ache that exists for overland travel.

Glad you mentioned it. I was worried about this, and was specific on my intentions of returning the carnet from Europe. She said as long as all the pages match up with entrance exit stamps (although this can be worked around in some cases) and the last country you go to signs the last page of the carnet,... and there are no more entry stamps.....you are good. I'm going to give it a shot. please let me know if you confirm anything different! thanks (there is some difference between what is convevient for them, and what you can get away with...I hope)

Route- uh,..er... I've spent the last two months doing nothing but planning this trip... and its almost all been spent on paperwork. I was more concerned with getting access to the world then what I'd do when I got there. But I'm in SC now, on the day after thankgiving, I'll be heading for California with plenty of play time enroute. Late DEC or early MAY I'll be rolling over the border to eat sand in Baja, probably spend a week in ensenada doing a language course. Will Cross over to mazatlan via ferry from La Paz, roll down the coast towards Acalpulco, then up to Puebla for a new rear tkc hopefully, then the highlight of my mexico trip will be riding up to Pico de Orizabo base camp. Been dreaming to ride up to that camp ever since a moutaineering trip 6 years ago. Lots of volcanic ash, hope I make it! I love that region, Orizba will take a good week to explore at least, then its the panamerican down to Tierra del fuego,...maybe Brazil. By June I want to be flying to Australia, ride for two months, work/play for two-just enoughto survive make a little dough and to wait out the monsoons in SE Asia. September is thailand/malaysia, fly to Nepal, ride India Nepal through December. Now,.. I'd love to do the silk route, but I'm worried about Iran, pm me on that,.. and I cant afford their duty on the bike. So its off to S. Africa, JAN FEB MAR APR should get me up to Europe, then I cash in the carnet, should pay for my way to Knordcap, then get a ferry to iceland, then fly to Canada, if I've still got the dough and tiem, ride for Alaska

yeah....half baked! I know.... but I got my carnet damn it! thats half the battle,

It was get married or ride around the world...literaly,... I wish I could say it was an easy choice,.. but it wasnt. (to say she's pissed is an understatement!...understandably of course) The world's to much of temptress though, gotta ride it

if anyone is game to ride, I'll probably be in your neighbor hood or on your route at some point,...would love the company.. there's always room at my campfire,.. and maybe booze and a cigar if your lucky!

good call, I didnt consider that,.. to busy feeling sorry for myself after a fat bill,.. I guess I was thinking more about bank agencies offering garauntees to overlanders in UK as opposed to the US,.. it just wasnt available via either of my banks,...they virtually laughed at me, ...and my credit is fine....they are biker haters! all of them! (just messing, they probably love bikers....stateside executive harley rider types...I love them to..lots of love here..no hate)

Yeh that's the only good thing about the UK. I got mine in South Africa - 200% for Egypt. That hurt!

I did trans-africa earlier in the year:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=375721

Visa's only really required in advance for the top-half of the continent, most of which I got in London in a coupe of days (prior to departure). Libya was a bitch tho & took many weeks of wraggling with consulates & agencies.

Sorry for the hijack BTW

If you're planning on Tierra del Fuego, keep in mind that winter there starts in March. By mid-April it can snow an awful lot.
