1997 KTM 660 Rally replica
Saw this in for sale and was wondering if this is really the bike replica or some fabrication like we seen here in the forum a year ago. plus how reliable is this bike at all? |

Is there ever a "Real" one, or is the "Replica" the real thing?
So the question is: Is this a Replica, or a Copy?

Nah, the one in your first post is the real thing, i assume its the one that is for sale at Procycle? A proper Rallye bike has the rear tanks etc, the one in your last post, well i'm not really sure what that one is but it has rallye bits on it so i assume its used for a similar type role.
Oh and the bike is a 640, not a 660, as far as i can tell.

I vote 'REAL' ...

I'm not saying that they have all raced, but they would have at least been prepped as spare bikes. Not having seen this one, it looks very similar to mine. Fairing, tanks and bash are a pretty good indicator. The 'rudimentary' cockpit is always a good place to look too - each will be different as they would have been specced and laid out for the individual rider's preferences. And rest assured that you'll be able to tell the difference between a 'make believe' and a legit - the true Rallye is very much a competition bike for a start (- whereas an Adventure, as per that last pic) is the 'road-goer' that was loosely based on the Cross-country racers. I'd be more than happy to post some pics of mine upon request/with a little IT assistance, if anyone's interested ... Thinking about it, it might be time to sell mine on. She's a beast that needs to be raced, or at least ridden as intended - the commute must be killing the poor thing at the moment !!

I am not. i was thinking about getting it.
The biggest difference between this one and the rally ones i see in most of the photos is the location of the exhaust and the amount of them 2 vs 1. The part of the wind deflector in the front is translucent as to the one in this. and the rear tanks look very different. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now that's a daily commute! ![]() Quote:

I'm Still Confused.
Why is it, that the Real thing is called a replica? From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A replica is a copy that is relatively indistinguishable from the original.

I'd say that it is a legal thing most likely. There is no model that is marketed under the label 660R and that is manufactured on an assembly line. as oppose to the 625sxc that had been a standard assembly line model with the support, i.e. spare parts and documentation.
The replica in this case probably comes to say that this model is not going to have spare parts available the next 10 or 15 or X years as they guarantee a standard model. And probably some other things that if we were in the industry we should have known. Quote:

the one you are looking at is an EARLY rally, they went to low exhausts later on

How is the parts availability? is this bike maintainable without self fabrication of items?
