Gunsite Academy

One of if not the original training academies in the US. Set up by LTC Jeff Cooper. Sniper X may stop by to add some more as he spent some time at the ranch...

Time for range bags!

Mine I converted from my old photo bag.

Top pocket where the ready camera would be. (Also my muffs would be in here.)

Main modular lense pocket. (Normally the brick of .22 would be in here also.)

Side pockets.

Laptop sleeve in the back.

Anything else I need?

What about you guys?

Although my last post was kind of in jest I do carry a trauma kit in my range bag.

If I'm not at work, this is on me or within easy reach. I've got a P380 as well, but I've grown distrustful of the .380 ballistics. Sooner or later I'll sell it.

It is a great place. I spent a lot of time there when Rich Gee owned it. He sold it to the Current owner, Col. Buzz Mills, who is good at changing things to his liking. He has made the academy more orented towards civilians whilst still catering to LEO and Mil by throwing a ton of money into it and making the whole place larger, and adding a ton of ranges.

When I was there it was smaller and more oriented towards LEO and Mil and was such a great place to train and have fun. I was there so long ago that Col. Cooper was not only still alive, but out on the ranges frequently. I did go twice after Col;. Mills bought it, but he no longer wanted to either produce videos to enhance the training experience, nor was he willing (like Rich was) to trade out services for classes, or better yet, let me take the classes free to be better trained for the video to follow.

I can say the facility is now tighter run, and bigger and more efficient for the mission it has which has changed a bit to include more civilians. And I am completely in agreement they have needed to do this for a few reasons since I first got there. Rich and I had talked about him doing that and it was in the plans before he got the offer to purchase from Buzz Mills.

I have not been back for a course since Rich sold it because I didn't feel after doing so much work there for the cheap prices I charged I needed to pay for classes, and since I actually instructed a few classes, I REALLY didn't
feel I needed to pay. Oh well, times change, sometimes for the better and all in all, Gunsite is better since Buzz Mills bought it.

Yeah, I just don't have any faith that a pair o reasonably well placed 95 grain hp's will stop a determined threat. (and yes, I know that 9mm isn't the be-all/end-all in ballistics but it's half again heavier and delivers twice the energy.)

Put two of them in someone's eye socket and see what you get.

Yeah, that, plus most don't carry 380's in lieu of 9mm's. Most (I guess I am only speaking for myself) carry a 380 when they can't carry anything else. So the comparison for me is 380 vs thrown rock. Not 380 vs 9mm.

Of course that is a ballistically slippery slope. Every caliber is better than nothing, but will also help someone rationalize all the way down to 25acp... Of course, same logic goes up in size too. Why carry a 380 when you can carry a 9, why carry a 9 when you can carry a 40, why carry a 40 when you can carry a 45, and so on and so forth. So basically every caliber shy of .454 or 25acp in the other direction is just a compromise

Just sayin', I carry a 380 and in no way argue that it is a bad-ass round. Its just a gun that I can realistically carry in any clothes, anywhere. I admittedly haven't purchased anything in 9mm that is tiny in size, so my 380 is being compared to guns that are more Glock 19 sized as far as carry-ability.

Depending on the day and season I carry different guns, from .32 acp up to .357 or .45acp. What you like is a factor, too. I happen to really like a Beretta 84, and in 25 years have never seen a Beretta 84 fail to feed or eject, even when neglected and dirty. That is far more than I can say about any 1911 I have ever seen.
