Haven't checked in here in a little while, I've got a question for the mil-surp guys. Looking at a no 4 mk1 Enfield made by Savage, marked US Property. Is this any more or less desirable than a Brit or Aussie built example? And in good condition, what's a good price range?

I remember my Grandfather (Purple Heart recipient), talking about his WWI experiences in France while serving with the Army's First Inf. Div. ( Big Red One). He was a dog handler (K9), and lost his dog to a German bullet in an action. I was ten years old when he died (1963), but I'll always remember how highly he spoke of the Enfield rifle that he fought with. I also remember him talking about the German machine guns and artillery, and how afraid he was of them.

He never handled another firearm in his life after the war ended, though his son (my uncle), enjoyed deer/pheasant hunting in Western IA, a great deal.

I'm sorry that I can't be of help with the value of the rifle, but to my Grandpa, such a rifle may have saved his life. He was 19 yrs. old during WWI, and if I could own his actual rifle, I'd consider myself a very lucky and blessed man.

If these rifles could only talk......

Kind of a cool backyard ballistics test even if it is like asking how many licks to the center of a tootsi roll pop.

As for the Enfield, I have a British Enfield 303 that I bought in 97' for $100. I've seen similar guns to it now going for $250.

I own an Enfield Jungle carbine made in England in 1945. My personal feeling is that the British made rifles are preferable but there are some who prefer the others. Check out the Enfield forum, they'll set you straight.

I have one, the people that collct enfields all seem to have at least one....they round out the collection. They are lend-lease guns, but I bet you already know that....never issued to us troops.

Price....there are so many factors. First is condition, naturally....then it can vary greatly depending on where you are....if they are around they will go cheaper....if not expect to pay more. When I got my Type 99 I paid high....they just are not around in the mid west...but in talking to guys in AZ, CA, and other places on the west coast they are going pretty cheap. My rifle there would go for about $300 less then it will sell for here.

I bought my Enfield about two years ago for (IIRC) $400

Many of them got cut up to make hunting rifles....if the one you are looking at is as issued that is a HUGE plus.

If you are getting into other areas after dipping your toes in to milsurp area with 91/30's or something, do some reading and know what you are buying....not much risk with what you are looking at here....but fakes are EVERYWHERE.....people even fake the above "jungle carbine". Know as much as you can before you buy.

Yeah, whatever. Clearly a fail when smoking after handing lead. Sure to make you VERY healthy and show the entire world just how much you've thought it all out.

We all have our vices. May be a bit cavalier of me but after all the Hazardous materials I've been around and War gases I've dealt with over the years, handling Pb is real low on my concern list. Right up there with worrying about getting gas on my hands.

Sorry, my crocks were at the cleaners.

Left leg has a circulation issue from leg injury otherwise my ankle gets nice and swollen, so I try to wear calve height socks to keep it compressed a little. Lucky for me the fashion show isn't till the next video.

Sigh. Looks like my Ruger 44 mag carbine is a single shot semi auto. Even after a good cleaning and gas port scrubbing it refuses to feed the next shell. After a bit of checking, it seems as though a place called Rody's in NH is where it's going to go soon. Ruger speacialists or something like that.
