But Sig is a FFL (I'm sure manufacturers are in a different category, but legally it's the same as a FFL) so it's legal. Sniper-X was asking if it was possible for two private citizens to exchange firearms in the mail.

Well, if by NM yuo mean National Match, they can and usually are a very good pistol. BUT the new colts have been getting a bad rap in the 1911 circles. So, Iwould say you might save a lot of money and buy a Springfield Loaded or even a higher end model ike this,
Trophy Match

Oh,, and loadeds NEW go for anywhere from 800 to about 1100 depending on model.

Doing a grip safety on a 1911 is easy as long as you don't break out the dremel you'll be fine. Order a beavertail from Ed Brown parts and get the jig and it will be a little bit of elbow grease, but you'll be well chuffed with the results! A beaver tail is the MAIN thing one can do to a GI 1911 to kake a world of difference in feel.

YES, it's required! Many folks on the interwebs will try to convince you otherwise, but you must have one even to apply Dura-coat type of finishes. I'm sure some of it goes on without an FFL but technically it's unlawful.

As far as any "certification" to become a gunsmith, all you need is tools, the willingness to start doing it and the skills to back it up (if you plan on being in business for very long).

One of the major gun parts/gunsmith tool distributors is working towards a voluntary certification process in conjunction with the (very few) colleges that offer degrees in gunsmithing. Kind of like a mechanic with ASE certifications, it wouldn't be required to be in business but would be a good marketing tool that says you meet certain minimum standards. (This is on the ground floor, it was just brought up last year...I teach for one of the colleges and am involved with the program)

Not mine, but close. I have birdseye maple grips.
I've had mine 32 years now IIRC. Despite the M59's bad reliability reputation, mine is the ONLY auto pistol I ever experienced that has NEVER, NOT EVEN ONCE, malfunctioned. Mine has Pachmayr grips, and no other mods.

I go along with SniperX in that people pass along stories about guns that can really kill a gun's reputation, even though they have never even seen, much less shot one.

That thing's $1600.oo!?!

You could find a nice NM or Gold Cup with all those features for a lot less money... and it'd be a Colt.

i believe all of the STI's, with the exception of the Spartan, are entirely USA.

Philippines. i think, and i'm only an internet expert, that the frame, slide and barrel are made there by armscor and the gun is assembled there using US built sti innards. final quality control is preformed here by sti.

this is information i've garnered from the net in my search for a 1911. i don't own one but want to and have been roaming the forums for information.

I was trying to get my dad's pistol to me ( FL to CT ). My step mother has it and I wanted her to send it to me. I was told never do that.
