No motor? No problem!

My friends Jim and Colin from the Seattle area came down for their bi-annual Central Oregon soils clinic. Jim graciously lent me his ‘07 525 XW for the weekend. Real nice machine and I tried hard to be respectful of the loan, thanks again Jim!

We had a little snow up in the hills, some sprinkles down lower and with all the pine needles were looking forward to some cool and dust-free conditions.

Rolled the 2 miles of pavement to the dirt and met up with Pegz on his ‘09 530 for a single track seminar that he’s been working to present for the past month or so. He has been linking up a ton of sweet trails that extended this morning’s program to something like 35 miles of sugar-frosted Duncan Hines cake mix with pine needle coconut filler.

Todd has this area wired. Virtually no dust (a few isolated incidences) and very grippy up in the trees.

A few short 2 tracks between the singles. Should’ve waited just a second here as Jim lofted the front wheel all the way to the corner ahead. His ‘08 450 is an amazing machine, more about that later.

Pegz

These guys are having a good time.

Headed north now our original plan was to have lunch in Sisters and session some righteous single tracks up that-a-way. There’s so much to sample on the way there though, we got a little side-tracked.

Jim making everything look small.

Pegz

We found the right elevation and excellent dirt.

From here we blasted over towards the ditch trail but Pegz hit something and he wasn’t at the next grouping. He went home and found this in his boot.

There's a bunch more . . .

After we gathered and realized Todd was headed home, Colin discovered a rear flat. It was about lunch time and we were 4 miles or so from my house so he rolled it home to slip in a fresh HD 18”.

(btw Todd just called and he has a fractured toe)

Watching Colin change a flat and eating lunch.

We picked up right where we left off and roasted a big chunk of awesome single track (too busy riding - no photos) which took us up to about 4800’ and we got into the snow.

Not a ton of snow but enough to make it different.

We got shut down on a spectacularly scenic single track that had a bunch of fresh blown-down timber. Not just a couple sticks, large, mature trees toppled during that last big blow we had. Too bad, it’s gonna take a chainsaw to open that up again next year. Oh well, there’s a pile of other stuff we have yet to sample today.

We sessioned this little 2 track road for a few minutes and went looking for more.

Colin gettin' some.

Right on the edge of the snowline, soils were dreamy.

Jim’forced’ me to try his 450 - HOLY CRAP! Now I know why guys get this one!

So smooth and quick that thing is - getting back on a 525, the 450 made it feel like an XR. I was amazed at the difference

But the 525 is still the bomb!

Jim back on the 450 - the dirt was GRIPTASTIC!

So we keep blasting around up in the woods, hitting single track, game trails, old skidder tracks and sometimes X-country through the stubborn manzanita bushes to put together a nice loop back to the farm. I’d never seen this small canyon not 10 miles from my house. Sun is going down and so is the temperature, it’s supposed to be 20 degrees tonight.

We were kind of freeballin’ it through the bushes to this cliff. Can’t tell but it’s a 30 foot drop off behind me.

This is the, ‘trail’ - oops. It always looks so flat in our photos of the country around here. Truth is, we have lots of hill climbs and topography on this side of town. Looking north towards Black Butte and Mt Jefferson on the horizon. (3 Fingered Jack is the pointy one on the left)

That's it for saturday. We all piled into our car and went to Bend for fresh seafood. A truly great day - especially for a guy with NO MOTOR in his bike!

Next . . . Sunday in the desert.

Sunday!

Kinda stiff this morning but it’s a glorious-sunny-high-desert-early-winter----ski-hill-should-be-open-but-it-isn’t kind of day. Perfect for the eastside, if there’s a breeze.

Frosty at 10:am

Put my own tall EE seat on that unit and my ass was so happy and grateful. 100 + miles saturday on the stock saddle was . . . well, punishing compared to the big foamy.

Coolest moto rig and Brad’s head.

Brad is going to lead this desert tour on his XR and I swear he had at least 5 gallons of fuel in that pig.

Yeah it was a little dusty but there was this strong 20-30 mph November wind scouring the desert and so, the dust away. At times you could be right on the guys wheel, or wait about 20 seconds and chase the plume ahead.

Brad dab

Jim

Colin, chargin’

We had a great run up the powerlines and through the sand to that drainage (the one like a 70’s skatepark snakerun) and took a few pictures coming down.

AW on his new 510 - yea!

Brad shot this sandy sequence!

. . . more later

Thanks Dave, Pegz, Brad, and Austin

We had a fantastic weekend! There was so much chocolate, our bikes aren't even dirty. We really appreciate the local tour guides showing us their secret stash, nice work on your trail system!

Colin will post a few more photo's from Monday, another epic day! Colin and I were on our own, but with a little direction from Dave, found the goods! Our intent was to be back at the truck by 1pm to hit the road back to Seattle, but we couldn't seem to stop twisting the throttle, we didn't get back to the truck until almost 4pm.....

If you guy's are ever up our way, or want to come up our way, we have some super secret stuff to share with you! (Brad, you'll need to leave that 10 gallon tank at home though, it won't fit between the trees up here )

More Sunday action...

Colin and Jim:

Wox rippin' the kwad trail:

Colin above the canyon:

On the edge of the canyon overlooking the Crooked River:

I saw Colin do a little bmx-like move on his 525. He kinda hopped it up over this little ditch jump where I was taking pictures. I thought I saw something weird when he did it and shrugged it off, but then the pics kinda confirmed my suspicion! Too cool.
