Greek Autom Ride, a week of 2200 km
6 to 13 Noe 2008...... A ride of 2200 km
Athens – Serres – Thessaloniki – Xanthi – Kavala – Thessaloniki – Pindos Mountain (Valia Kalda) –
Vovoussa – Flabourari – Metsovo – Bouka Village – Amfilohia – Rio - Athens
Cause of this ride was the track day that we were invited at Serres.
The ride up to Serres was in normal pace acompanied with George (capo998) and his Ducati. We arrive at Serres just
after the night has follen and after the arrangement for our accomodation in the hotel we met Antonis (petani) with his
wife and son. As we always do.....beating the cook is a sport so we head to a well known tavern to fill our stomachs
The day after was full of track action and completly new experincies for me. And the day ended as usual.........resting
our bodies in the tavern.........
We start our Saterday morning by having a coffee at Serres central square. After finishing our coffee most of our friends
departured for the long trip to Athens. Me and my wife Rania we head to Thessaloniki. Toggether with us, up to the
city limits, drove Nikos (nfot) who was going to his home at Volos.
First stop was at the place where Stavros (barchman) works. There we met Stelios (thunderosauros) and all toggether
we went to Aristotelous Square for coffee. At this place also came Spyros (spypetr) and Konstantina (spirit). Later on
more people came and we went to a traditional greek tavern with special dishies. Something like the spanish “tapas”
accompanied with wine or ouzo. To much food, wine and laughter that night. We met people we didn't know and we are
glad to meet them.
At Sunday the programm we had was for Xanthi to meet Nikos (verzevoulis) who serve his duty in the army. At 11.00
we met at Kamara a common meeting place at Thessaloniki. The weather was nice ant sunny and the road, althought
we ride most of it on Egnatia Odos (E-65), was splendit.
We cover the 270 km to our destination in normal pace and when we arrive to Xanthi it was time for lunch.
We met Nikos and without any delays we went where else.... In a tavern.
After the delicious lunch we drove at the old city where I tried to act as tourist quide without success
mainly because Lefteris (atsatsos) was yielling for coffee and other more kinky words which is not
aloud to be written.
Rania made the choice of the caffeteria which we stand for coffee and we all admit that was a nice
choice. We fed ourselfs with coffeine and jokes about the northern and southern Greeks.
Late afternoon or early night we start our way back to Kavala for us, we were going to stay at a
friend house there and to Thessaloniki for the rest of the company. At Kavala we did some driving in
the city because Lefteris wanted to shoot some pictures. The departure for Thessaloniki was delayed
by the empty stomach of Spyros who attacked a nearby greek fast food (the well known greek
“gyros”). After that our company left to Thessaloniki and we head to our friend house.
Late weik up at Monday morning and toggether with our friendswe went for coffee. Home made lunch
followed and later at the afternoon, around 17.00, we start our engine heading to Thessaloniki for one
more night there. Nothing remarkable happened in the way back and as soon as we settle we met our
friends there. Coffee in the beggining and spirits latter accompanied a night of lauph, gossip and
vexing. The next day was the departure day but we hadn't deside yet where to go. Rania had some
days off so we postpone the desition for the following morning.
Early birds this morning and imidiate departure even without a coffee as we agreed to left it for later.
Finaly we choose to have our coffee at Veria and there we deside to head to Pindos Mountain and pay
a visit to the National Park Valia Calda.
We arrive there and we head for the shelter in Vovoussa village in order to upload the bike and a make
a ride in the Park. Unfortunately the shelter was closed for the weekdays and opened only at the
We ask for any available room in the village but we finally choose to continue mostly because of the
prices (the cheapest was 50 €). So we entered at the Park as we were loaded.
The road was in good contition until a point in the “Arkoudorema”, a small river, where became muddy
and the bike with the kind of tyres and the load was stack. Thankfully it wasn't something that I
couldn't anticipate and I didn't made any other effort to move forward because the area is quite
remote and winter time isn't for games. We took te road back to Vovoussa where we stop for lunch
and some very nice photos and we continue our path.
After 20 km and while it was getting dark we arrived at Flabourari, a nice, small village. In the central
street of this village we found a sign “Traditional Inn” but for our bad luck it was also closed. We
thought that the better we had to do was to go back at the small cafe we passed and ask for
accommodation. While I was turning the bike we saw an old man and we ask him about the inn. He
said to us that the inn belongs to the brother of the cafe owner and ask him for further details. So on
we went to the cafe and we ask Sotiris, the owner, if we can stay in the inn. His answer was a great
relief. “My brother isn't here but don't worry. I can open the inn for you.” So we went to the inn which
was made by stone and wood in the very traditional way of Epirous. Sotiris lit the heating and the
fireplace and leave us alone in the hole inn.
We shetled and we went to the cafe for a coffee. Double greek coffee this time.....anything else it
would an offence to this fantastic remote place of Greece. After finishing the coffee we walk in the
village to shoot some photos and we went back to the inn for a hot shower. Later on the evening we
went to the cafe again. But this time was transformed in a tavern with delisious home made dishes
and “tsipouro” an other kind of “ouzo”, stronger and without the sweat taste of “ouzo”. Around our
table was the local people and we discuse with them about the destilation of “tsipouro” and the
dificulties of logging which is the job for the most of the people there.
That night was long, but with this kind of company around you time really flies. It was well after midnight when we was at the bed.

At the morning we woke up and made coffee in the stove of the inn. A coffee that we took it in the
forward balkoni viewing the village and the peaks of Pindos Mountain.
Later we prepaired our buke for the next destination, we pulled the door of the inn as we had agreed
(we had payed the bill from the previous day) and we left for Metsovo. The road was mountain type
with alot of turns and accompanied with the silend of the woods. The drive was one man show and we
did enjoy it. Only once we spotped to make some photos in the lake which Aoos River supplies with its
We arrive at Metsovo, a former major crosspath for the caravans to Europe once. Nice town with a
remarcable architecture. We stop at the central square and we took a coffee and we enjoy the
sunshine and the come and go of the locals.
Leaving Metsovo we had deside for the next destination. The Ancient Oracle of Dodoni. The very first
Oracle in ancient Greece, a holy place devoted to Jupiter. Unfortunately the only remain is the Theater
which we visit. The weather was getting better and better as the altitude went down and the cold
was not an issue any more. We arrive at the site and we walk around the Theater for long. Later we
took a refresment in the cantin of the site and we stood there without any words thinking the majesty
of this place.
We recharge our batteries there an we moved on the next point. Following the local roads, avoiding
Egnatia Odos, we reach the interchange for Arta. The so called National Road which will be motorway
in a few years. Our destination this time is Amfilohia. An old city in the Ionian coasts and after that a
fisherman village called Bouka. At this village the typical tavern – cafe is owned by a friend.
A friend that we would like to visit. After the accomondation arrangements we called Kostas
(cousteau) and we set up a meeting at Amfilohia.
We stayed until 22.30 because Kostas had a lot of km to drive to Agrinio and the next day was a
working day for him.
We drove back to Bouka where our friends waited for us. Home made diner at the cafe – tavern alot of
wine, jocks, friendly teassing to each other and one more night finished quite late.
The previous night fun-time gave us a late wake up the next morning, lasta day of our one week road
trip.We pick up our laggages, arrange them on the bike and went to the cafe for a coffee with our
friends who was allready woken up since early morning (how they manage to do it I don't know). We
finish the coffee and salute our friends with the promish to see them soon and we start our final ride.
Only one stop we made. At Rio we had arrange to meet Stavros (stzog), a good friend from the
Greek motorcycle forum www.bikerspirti.net.
We had a coffee together and after an hour we continiued our trip to Athens. The dusk found us
running in the National Road and after a while the metropolitan area welcomes us with a huge foul
moon and alot of traffic.
Arriving at home and to our kids was the end of a fantastic seven days trip with new experiences,
magnificant natural sceneries and batteries recharge to keep us smilling utnil the next possible escape.
