Ditto on that from Reidy. Your biggest obstacle on that route would be crossing the Verde River just down from the Childs power plant. It can be done (ask Big E), buuuuuuuuut, I don't think most would try it.

Eric, don't you have a picture somewhere of you making that crossing when your 990 was brand new?

FWIW, I run 15 to 17 PSI for a KLR on dirt. Any less than that and I'm afraid I'll get pinch flats.

I attempted that crossing on my BMW adventure some years ago with less than stellar results. Wound up sucking water into the engine. not a fun thing.
as a new rider, id suggest avoinding this route for a while. and when you do it, have some buddys to ride with you.

Your right. Even 260 is closed for quite a stretch.

Maybe I will rethink the Crown King area and head to Lynx State Park as as destination.

Any other ideas for a 2 night trip to a cooler area with a quick return (avoid the heat) to Anthem on the third day?

Why not head over to young and hit the fr300 from that side and head over to strawberry from the east? There are several fun ways to get to young from here.

A very good thought. I made the trip to Young about a month ago and really enjoyed the ride.

I did not care for the ride from Anthem to Apache Junction ( RT 17, 101, 202). It took too long to get from the cool campground above Roosevelt Lake at 6000 ft back home. I was on the 202 around noon and was outside of my heat tolerance. Is there a better way from Anthem?

Thanks for you input.

North up the 17 to Camp Verde than 260 to 87 east to FR300. The Rim Rd (fr300) is open I did it the other day. Everything below the Rim is closed.

If u choose to go more off-rd than black top try this route:
https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=N...sz=16&t=m&z=11

There is more scenic stop u can do on Fossil Creek rd, u can even park over z bridge and take a dive in z river that should cool u off that damn heat . I would. Once ur in Strawberry u turn right to go to Young via Payson (the boring choice )or left to FR300 (take it from z north side, from hwy87 all z way down to Young). That should be epic .

Are they re-restoring the creek?

Road

There was a section of the road that caved in on the side of the hill. They are redoing it completely. I was told this.

Folks.... most everything is closed off a main road if it is below the rim, and much of what is above the rim as well. I did run fr300 (rim road) and it was open but almost every side road off of a main road is marked as closed. And yes Fossil creek road is closed as well. It is open from Strawberry to the trail head for hiking but that is it.

Went out early 5:00am rode down to Black Canyon City & met Doug/Wander lust. He had not been to Crown King so was a good time to check it out. Went in from the east & the fire damage is very extensive. The gal at the General store said she was told the closures would last 2 years. The town is in meetings to try & drasticaly change that. She said all the businesses are down 40 %. If you get a chance take a ride up & spend a few bucks as they are hurting.

We rode west to the Prescott, Wagoner split & went south/west on Wagoner coming out on 89 where Doug went south & I went north. You could go aroung the barracades at the split but I think would need to turn back before Pine Flats Rd. Wagoner Rd. is hard to believe it's the same road, like a frwy all the way out.
