If you are in the East Valley take the Apache Trail and then follow the rest of the route given. I find that if you ride like a maniac it's faster than taking the slab.

Understood. Keep in mind that there are several bail out points so you can switch to slab at many points.

The best riding in the state (IMHO) is north of Pine. Typically I will just slab there to get to the "good uncrowded stuff".

There's a slightly more direct route from the east side of 4-Peaks that hits dirt near Jake's Corner and heads toward Gisela with a little pavement, then north on dirt again toward Payson. You come out on 87 just south of Payson. It was part of the HATM Payson B-loop several years ago. It's more technical than 4-Peaks/A-Cross/288, but I did it 2-up with luggage on a 950 Adventure.

this saturday ride to crown king

Big bike friendly loop from phx. to crown king and back. About 175 miles of pavement, and about 70 miles of forest service roads . Can easily make it longer or shorter, easier or harder depending on what guys feel like. I plan on riding my Ktm 990. Meet at the waffle house on I-17 and bell rd. at 7:30 a.m. this Saturday. We'll be going up to about 7500 ft. elevation. We can eat lunch and get gas at crown king. Call me for more details and a head count, Bob @ 602-717-0808

Cheers!

Box is fun for somethings but not ideal for my purposes. Too crowded, too boxed, too much sand, no critters.

I have just been informed (by my wife) that wives are invited but not mandatory. However bare in mind that the more wives there are, the less they talk to you and they bring food.
