Help Me Shop

Okay guys, here's the challenge. I am picking up a low mileage 2000 XR650R this weekend. The bike already has a desert tank, Pro Taper bars, 1" riser, bark busters, Trail Tech Vapor, and FMF Quiet Core 4 exhaust. I plan to immediately order a Baja Designs dual sport kit, with horn and key switch.

I have a total of $1500.00 to spend on this bike to make it mine. The Baja Design dual sport kit will eat $500.00 of that. So I have $1000.00 left. What should I buy?

Nothing...Pay off some bills, add to your savings, invest it! Go ride the bike and enjoy!

revalve/respring the suspension for you,
Tires,
Steering Stabilizer

That's a fun question.

- Perhaps some jetting, unrestricted intake, and proper needles and seat.

- GPS

- Case and rotor guards

- Rack and additional subframe support

- IMS fat pegs

- Frame guards

- Ride-on tube protectant

- Tool/gear bags

- A better seat

- KTM folding mirrors

- An extra counter sprocket or two

Come on guys, help me out. I'm sure I'm missing a "few" things.

first I would make sure the suspension is set up correctally for your weight and style of riding.

Next I would go through the bike and look at wear items, break pads, cables, chain/sprockets, hoses/wires, all that stuff then do a decent check of regular maintance like bearings, maybe that little rubber bushing in the clutch that doesnt get enough lubing (google xr650r and find the pig pen, look up achilies section and youll find it)

If you dont end up spending too much on that stuff I would out fit the bike for whatever your purpose is going to be, things like luggage, whether that be a small fender bag or maybe the giant loop setup, or a comfortable seat/taller seat.

If you think you are goign to be riding at night at all a rewired stator is a good idea along with new lighting. If on road alot definatly swap out the front sprocket for a 15 tooth, it makes a really big difference. If off road more consider changing, or atleast bringing with you, a 13 tooth front.

Last thing I can think of off the top of my head for the bike is protection. disk guards, radiator guards, better bashplates, barkbusters, fender brace if you are carrying alot of luggage.

And if you want to go over the top you could go out to the garage and take a good look at your tool kit, find out that this bike cant use tools from your other bike or that maybe you can thin out some of those odd tools that the other bike needs and this one doesnt.

I agree with the the Foot pegs as a must item, GPS's are fun, and I swap front sprockets almost weekly!

If you're still in New Mexico, you may be out of luck getting your XRR dual sported. I moved here a couple of years ago, and tried to do the same thing to my XRR. I had a baja designs kit (blinkers, horn, lights, etc), but since my title said "off road", no one would give me a plate (MVD or MVD express). Not saying it cant be done, but you either have to get really lucky, or work your ass off to get it done. Good luck, and if you do get it done, drop me a line and let me know.

I am 6'2" and 205 lbs. Been riding for over 30 years. Probably a B rider.

Can anyone tell me sources for parts and accessories? I already know about XRs Only and Baja Designs. Are there others?

Here is my shopping list so far:
Baja Designs EZ Mount Kick Start Dual Sport Kit
K&N air filter (or would Uni be better)
Scotts Stainless Oil Filter
Works Connection Rear Caliper Guard
XRs Only Case Saver
XRs Only Chain Guide
XRs Only small and large fender tool bag. Figured one for the front, one for the back.
XRs Only Graphics Decal Kit in gray
XRs Only High-Flow Side Panel Modification Kit
XRs Only Shark Fin
XRs Only skid plate

I want a set of radiator braces, but the ones from XRs Only states that they will not fit with oversized fuel tank, which I have.

I think I am also going to order an FMF step up stand cause I am not sure about lifting that beast to a static stand.

Your opinions and help are greatly appreciated. DAMN THIS IS FUN!

I would suggest the uni filter over the K&N. The K&N filter lets small amounts of dust and dirt into the intake.

I'm surprised it is not said already, how about proper riding attire.

Also being a used bike, I would go through and re-lube and or just plain out replace wheel bushings, swing arm busings, steering head bushings (I plan to do this, this winter). I'm okay with my stock suspension as I'm no riding expert, but I plan to tear down the forks and rebuild them. All this stuff is not much at all, just time consuming but once snow comes I'll have the time.

Did you look at the Electrosport Dual Sport kit, I like mine, I also built a C-Cell battery pack to run the GPS, KTM fan and whatever other goodies, I mounted that in the airbox. I used a highwaydirtbike switch for the KTM fan, and GPS. Another must is an aluminum skid plate. Also rewind your stator.

Good luck, and enjoy the riding :-)
