KLR..has anyone run a cam in a KLR???
OK...I just got to know....has anyone run a performance cam in a KLR? Or, have any of you know how to guys heard of it being done?
If so....what was it and how well did it work? Logically it is the next step for my engine. I know ...I know..I should have bought a different bike...but I didn't.....it wouldn't have mattered...I would be doing it to that one too! It's a sickness! So..back to the all important question...performance cams..who has them and who's running with them??? PLEASE!!!

I think you need to ask The Patman about that one Willys.

Cam grinds are a compromise. Do you want more high rpm HP or more low end Torque?

I had a nice long conversation with KLR Cary about three weeks before he was killed.
Part of the conversation included cams for the KLR. The way he put it was "that's a lot of money and time to spend to make a KLR into something its not". His line of thinking was that you would get more out of the engine by going with the (edit) 685 kit with head work without putting the stress on the engine by going with cams. He didn't think that the KLR would (safely) spin at the RPM's required to get the HP gains out of cams and that the engine would probably fall flat on it's face in the lower RPM's (or at least end up with a huge hole in the power band). What was interesting was when I asked about a degreeing the engine with a set of slotted cam shaft sprockets. He thought that the 705 kit with degreed cams would probably be the hot ticket, move the powerband down low and midrange (and suffer a little bit on the top end, but that's what the 705 kit was for). He told me that if I could talk Eagle Mike into machining up a set of cam sprockets that he would play with them to get a good baseline setting (he gave me a couple ideas at to how much to degree the cams but I didn't write them down, I figured he would always be there). If I ever get the money I might talk to Eagle Mike and see if he'll do me up a set of slotted sprockets, then I can play with them and set them to my calibrated ass-dyno. guns_equal_freedom screwed with this post 11-25-2008 at 01:50 PM |

You can't polish a turd.
Or, as Sarah Palin would say, putting a cam in a KLR 650 is like putting lipstick on a pig. That said, the KLR 650 is the bike I would most want to own if it ever came down to survival a Mad Max style post-apocalyptic world. |

"You can't polish a turd."
I used to think that too.... the Myth Busters openned my eyes last week when they did, in fact, polish a turd... Measured the gloss and everything... so... You can polish a turd... and you can make a KLR into something it's not... just takes a lot of dollars.... Probably better to get a different bike if you want to push the engineering limits of the bike you have unless you're hung up on the make and model. I'm interested in doing the 685 and headwork but I also know that I'm after enhancing the performance that can be had from the powerplant... I'm not interested in changing the performance characteristics by trying to build a high reving super thumper out of a tractor motor. It's just not worth it.... |

Lots of work is needed for modest power gains on the KLR design, wither it's the 650, 250, or Mojave. It can be done, but don't expect earth destroying changes.
Patman and Cary have done just about everything that can be done to the engine, and Greg @ CWR has done everything to be had out of a Mojave (which is transferable to the KLR250). Improvement, sure. Race material, questionable. Fun, yes.
