My Libya-Tunisia 2010

Hi there,
This is somehow an unusual ADV report because is divided in two parts and because unfortunately cars had play a major role in it V.
This year I had a major change in my job and I was able to take few weeks off. Willing to do a long trip on the bike and catch up with my family at some stage along the street. None of my good friends was available this time of the year and short annual leaves for my wife drove me to a good compromise dividing the trip in two parts.
Part one: second time around in Libya, first time ever with a group of unknown people, most of them by 4X4 on an semi-organized trip (http://www.dimensioneavventura.org/). And even more traumatic…I had the brilliant idea of taking my Dad with me to spend Christmas holiday together and show him what the Sahara was about. So few considerations: they were a nice bunch of people, no doubt. For sure the strength of the group has been the mutual help when needed and the nice dinners altogether by the fire. Dad, despite bit traumatized by camping and lack of wather initially, settled smoothly, felt in love with the desert and managed to keep doing the thing he loves the most: reading and philosophizing
The XR650L with some upgrades runs smoothly and comfortably . It miss some bhp but can manage this terrains perfectly (provide to check the battery before leaving ).
For sure I definitively understand that when I travel I want to be free to set my route and my time (as always done in the past). Moreover I realize that despite attractive under some points of view, a combine bike/car off road travel is impossible since they don’t share any needs and tracts rhythm.
Finally but not surprisingly the Sahara can be really cold at nights!
Part two: I promised my self that soon or later I would have take Alexander and Lara to the desert. To show it magnitude to Lara and to take Alex for some real camping! So it happen that by the time I was returning from Libya they could have fly to Tunisi to meet me and we could have drive trough Tunisia toward south where the Sahara begin. Once there could have take a 4x4 with a guide and visit the desert. And so we did. I contact Ahmed Ltaief the guide that we engaged during my first desert trip by bike few years before (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...light=algeria). He is a star, absolutely capable with any situation, highly recommended for bike and car trips around Tunisia . Contact him on 0021698673743.
It was a success, Alex loved the sand, camping and of course the camp fire. Lara loved it all.
Here you are some pics.

Below the map of the all trip.

This is the actual route done by bike in Libya. A circuite of about 3000 km.

Driving South trough Tunisia

That is what my Dad will do for the most of the trip:reading

Ghadames: after the first camp a quick visit to the old medina before leaving

Ready to go

A strange sort of watermelon, quite disgusting!

If travelling by bike is the first established step, this will be the second step:

Moon rise at the camp. On the other extreme the sun was setting!

Entering the Acacus.

…and reading…

Travelling towards the tarmac north of Sebha.

Part two
Back in Tunisi, the second chapter is starting: I left my bike with Maurizio who is taking back to Rome for me. My Dad is also flying back and I am jointing again with Lara and Alexander. We rented a great (!) car which didn’t have anything less then all the Toyotas I was travelling with…and off we go heading south again!

This are the some of the place where we stayed in Tunisia.

We couldn’t miss Matmata and the troglodyte house, film site of Star Wars

In Douz we left our splendid Fiat and moved everything on Ahmed’s Toyota for 4 days exploring the Grand Erg Orientale.

Discovering the sand…

Landscape from Timbaine

Soft sand

Nice colors at the camp

Ksar Ghilane

…and this will be the third step

Chot El Jerid

Approaching Tamerza, one of the Mountain Oasis.

The old Kasbha

Driving back north along the Algerian border. From here on there was many more kilometers to go back to Tunisi and many more to UK. I have been wondering around North Africa for nearly four weeks and I neather realize it…I’ll be back

Ciao

Yes, ufficially you do need a sort of escort. Having said so last time I went we didn't have any. I believe it depends by the number of people in the group. If the group is small you get along with no escort.
