640A Sidestands

Has anyone fitted a genuine KTM sidestand to a 640A and kept the centre stand on as well? I've heard that you can do it, but you have to do a bit of thinking/modding !

Probably easier/ cheaper to get a SW Mototech sidestand. Fitted up to my '03 in about 2 minutes

G'day angryad,
This is the bracket that someone on ADVrider made up to fit the factory sidestand with the standard factory centre stand:

Here's my KTM sidestand all ready for you to pick up and start filing that bracket.

IIRC DR AT did that, or a simillar bracket. Loadedagain did too, IIRC, and theres a thread in the 640 thread index on it, Angryad.

not guilty, although I wish I was. I just bought the motech and modified it to be self retracting. Now I'm having problems with the lower mounting bolt on the motech - original vibrated out despite super locktight, replacement snapped...I'm about to modify that as well. Maybe I'm too fussy, but I'm not overly impressed with the motech. Might go have a long look in the shed and decide if it'd just be easier to cop that setup for the original - thanks.

Mine is self retracting, snaps up as soon as the weight is off it, are ya sure you dont mean modified to be non-self retracting. I find with both the 300 and the 640's side stand that its best to use red loctite (262 IIRC), instead of the normal blue (243IRC), don't over tighten it, don't sit on the bike with the sidestand down as the extra weight can damage the bolt, and replace the bolt every 6months or so - the bolt on the 300's stand bends very easy, the 640 tended to vibrate out until I went to the stronger locktight

I broke the same bolt on the OCR (centrestand pivot bolt). My brother in law turned me up a new one in Darwin but I am not sure how long it will last as he made it out of mild steel. My long term plan is to replace it with a shoulder bolt or shoulder screw as in the picture below and keep a couple of spares in the bum bag on longer trips. If there is enough interest I am willing to purchace a box of these suckers and distribute them at cost price to any one that would lke a couple.

+1 for not putting any aditional weight on the SW Motech sidestand.
I bent mine like a banana on the same trip by using the footpeg to mount and dismount so I could get my leg over the dry bag on the rear rack. From now on it's dont put anything on the rear rack or use the hop around on one foot like a fool dismount technique
Paul.

I'll put my hand up for a few bolts (3?), like you I snapped the bolt on the OCR trip (twice - both times at Boulia!) , but I never use the side stand to take my weight. There were some theories going around that mild steel would be better because it would bend rather than snap?????? If possible , get them long enough so we can fit a nyloc nut on the other side.

And yes, I modified it to NOT be self retracting. I had a 7 week old baby crying in my ear when I typed that.........

And when the sw motech retracts grown men cry like a 7 week old baby when it gets 'em the shin, eh

I modified mine not to self retract, I lubricated the pivot and spring and let it get a build up of crud so it has enough resistance not to flick up by itself.

Paul, i will get 3 of the bolts off you as well if it all comes together.
They are a nuisance coming loose and falling out.
