hey Marilyn.

395 and 244 suck.

all twisty and isolated and scenic and junk- you wouldn't like it. take 84 the whole way; much faster and no chance of wearing out the sides of your tires.

Linkweewee and I will be in that neighborhood sunday with a big van if you need anything- you maybe have my number?

Not so sure about my rear-end on the stock saddle though.

Leaving Friday as early as possible, but late enough for the frost to melt in the corners on Hwy 20 going over the Cascades. Gonna ride all day and try to make La Grande before dark. Right now I'm thinking I'll run 20 over to 26, then up 395 to 244, and 84 down into La Grande. I'm going to gas up the Jeep, hook the trailer to it and leave it in the driveway for a friend to drive if I need to be 'rescued'.

Cell coverage (Verizon) looks a little sketchy heading east but....maybe I won't need it.

Anyone who's made that run is invited to offer suggestions.
Suggestion? Throw a leg over and keep twisting that loud handle. You'll be in La Grande before you know it.

Another suggestion. Don't ask linkweewee. He doesn't ride.

Nice try Mr. Man.....I put those things under a blacklight when I got 'em home and....they're clean.

I don't really want to ride 84...the wife's a little concerned about me being "out there" by myself with sketchy cell service. I looked into a SPOT, but at $149 for the unit and another $150 or so for the activation, it's a little outside the budget right now. I guess I'll do the "if I don't call by..." thing this trip and hope for the best.

You'll be on 84 for only a few miles. Your route choice is a good one IMHO, that's how I'd go...

Do you think this is realistic for a one-day ride, or.....overly ambitious?
Maybe I go east on 20 and then head up 97 from Redmond and catch 84 over to La Grande?

It'll be a long day, but you can do it in one. No, avoid 97 and long stretches of 84. They'll put you to sleep.

Your route is perhaps the best way.
20 to Sisters, 26 to Mt Vernon, up 395 to 244 at Ukiah. This time of year is awesome up that way. Best part of 395 is from Long Creek to the 244 junction to Ukiah. The freeway is long, boring and generally windy as heck after The Dalles.
395 and 244 are not heavily travelled but there's enough so you are not "out there". It's only about 360 miles. An easy day ride, just bring a lunch and just stop for gas. You'll be fine.
Have a fun ride.

Thanks guys. This is a big undertaking for me after a 12yr motorcycle 'void'. I think it'll mean a lot to my friend for me to visit and if I survive the ride, me and killer will be that much closer.

What Chip Seal Said !!

A different return route that I have done is Lagrande to Elgin to Athena to Umatilla. Cross river and take Wa 14 west along the river to either Hood River or Cascade locks. Cross river again and pick route home.

Option #2 is Lagrande to Union to Telocaset to Haines to Baker to Prairie City to Mt Vernon to Mitchell to Prineville etc.....

There really are no bad roads over that way. Leave early and give yourself plenty of time. Don't worry about being "out there". There are plenty of people in that area. Just be careful if they want you to stick your head through a fence, Especially if you hear Banjo's. Just go with it.

Yep,,395 north out of Mt Vernon is spectacular this time of year. Watch out for elk on the stretch over Battle Mt.,,no shit!
They hang out there to avoid the hunters. I've seen over 50 hanging out at the rest area!
From Ukiah to LaGrande you will see the larch trees (the Golden Spruce) in full golden color, the only evergreen that ain't! They should be turning color if they're not already done. We have 1 Larch tree on this side,,at Summit lake,,poor lonely bastard!

An easy and scenic day ride,,hold around 65,70 on the east side, and you'll be there before dark.
AND!,,the good part is,it's cold at night,,so,,,no bugs!

There should be room for that and another scoot too; navigator role will also include searching Craigslist inthe next metro area as we travel.
