Entering Mexico from Baja
Hi guys and thanks for your replies to my previous post.
Heading south and catching the boat all seems a little complex and the boat expensive, seeing as I am in the north of Baja I thought it best to waste a days ride back up north and cross into Mexico proper that way. Now, can I get the required Visa and bike permit along the Mex 2, I assume there is a border somewhere around Mexicali on the Mexican side? If not what is stopping me just driving into Mexico and not having said Visa-Permit? Or do I need to re-enter the states and cross back into Mexico in order to pass a border point and collect a visa and bike import permit thing. Or is all this too complicated too and I just bounce up and down in north Baja forever? Cheers Baz |

If you are riding around north end of Sea of Cortez then on Mex 2 you will pass thru San Luis Rio Colorado on the Sonora /Baja California border, south of Yuma. Stop there and get your import paperwork done and over with. You would not get any farther than Sonyta because they have a customs checkpoint south of town. the Sonoyta entrance to Arizona is at Lukeville a few km north of town.

If you don't find them, they will find you.
But that's not in a bad way, you'll just have to pay the same and fill in the same paperwork. Depends whether you want to get that done at your convenience or theirs, there's no penalty for either option, as far as I could tell. Enjoy the bouncing! |

Righto Dtop 1, Sonoyta checkpoint from now on.
This is one of the hazards of giving details of how and where such things are done at the Mexican border. The experience may be what was the case a year or two ago , but the border processes and rules are always in a state of flux, prone to being modified. The Sonyta checkpoint makes a lot of sense because most people crossing from Arizona and California are just going to visit Puerto Penasco and Baja- all within the "frontier zone" with special simple requirements. |
