damn atk conversion of the xr? Thats freaking cool. I'd buy it if I had the cash...alas I'll just have to deal with my xr650r sumo....how will I live?

I love my old xr. It was indestructible. I beat it in every way imaginable and it always started up for more. Hell it had the nickname "testbike" when I got it because the old owner would try stupid crap on it. I tried sumo racing with it as well so I guess "testbike" never really wore off. Sadly its for sale. Gotta pay for the "new" sumo.

Best memories of it are running balls to walls through mud and getting it stuck up to the axles, dragging it out on its side, then doing donuts around a tree, racing all sorts of out of shape up a hill over downed trees and wheelieing off the summit(knobbies on it at that time), and of course racing.

I rode a buddies kdx through some of the same beat up, tree covered, rocky terrain and when he asked how much more I liked his bike he was really surprised when I said I didn't....I wanted my bike back. His was too nervous and high strung. Nothing like the xr6.

ps. pulling the decompression lever while going down a hill works ok as a descent control but not great...its a decompression lever afterall. But no it doesn't hit the piston, at least not on my 85. Makes a funky noise, scares children and all that though.

23 years of XR ownership comes to an end.

OK all you XR fans, it's over for me. If you are interested, I have all of my XR stuff on that big internet garage sale, eleven auctions in all. Everything from my 600, to the lift table it sits on. Need a Honda enduro computer from a 86 XR6? How about a complete XR6 motor? Been thinking of a stroker crank? User name is hevyevyrevy, search that, and look at my auctions. Thanks for the memories XR.

Hey, XR and XL fiends. My XR600 piston has had it. It is just so thrashed and low on compression that I really need a replacement, it won't idle without choke and has a realy hard time starting sometimes. I wore myself out to the point of exhaustion trying to start it last night. This bike is my only mode of transportation so although I can borrow other modes of transport until I get it back together, I really need this done soon.

I am quite low on money and I'd like to make it as cheap as possible. I can get the bore done by a good machinist for $40 locally, i just need a piston kit. I've dropped off my spare XR cylinder with him. I may need to sell some parts I have, but I would like to spend less than $138+shipping on a 1mm overbore XR600 piston. Anyone have anything on their garage shelves they could sell cheap or get rid of that I could just buy a set of rings and a wristpin for and call good?

mcma111 had an XL one, but that won't work since the bore and stroke are different, 75x100mm in the xl and 80x97mm in the XR. I have the XR engine in the 1983 XL frame with the XL's head, by the way.

I'll post this in the xr600 thread too, and thanks again Steve in SF for the offer!

Geez Louise

You want a XR piston not a XL piston. Make up your mind.

OK it's off to the garage tomorrow to see what I have. I do have a 660cc slug for a XR but that would need a new sleeve and you don't have the $$ for that now do ya!

I do have a spare XR650l cylinder with a 675 slug but that stays here.

"Make up your mind"? He says he wants an XR piston. Give the guy a break. Why even bring up the 675 piston if you not going to part with it?

If one of your cylinders is not too worn out and it's 97mm I have a used stock XR600R piston you can have. I know your XL is a bit of a hybrid (burns both gas and oil)* so I'm not sure if that would be usefull but you are welcome to it.

*sorry, I couldn't resist.

I think he was kidding. He actually came to me and offered the piston to me in a PM. He follows my threads and wasn't sure what engine I was using in my XL and knew my situation. Being totally nice and offering a free piston.

In your defense, I could see how you missed that connection, and thus, missed the humor.

Anyway, let's move on, shall we?

I can actually get the bike to start and run, so I'm not in as dire straits as I thought I was the last time I tried to start it. Although the compression is at an all-time low, as it turns out I was out of gas. I'd still like to see what people have.

Thanks, MCMA, for checking your stash.

Haha! I wouldn't have been able to resist that one either!

I had my spare cylinder mic'd at the machinist's place and he says for being a 97mm bore, I'd need to go out 2 oversizes, and a 1mm overbore fits the bill. When switching back to my dual carb XL head, I noticed visibly worse bore wear and damage than in my spare. Not being in a position to leave my only wheels inop. for 2 weeks while I waited for parts and a bore job, I buttoned it up and called it "ok for now". So that cyl. won't b able to be just honed either.

Thanks for the generous offer.

Joel-
I have a stock bore cylinder and White Brothers (Arias) piston with low mileage if you're interested. This was removed from my '96 XR600 when I went to a 654cc big bore kit with XL600 cylinder and was running great before removed. The rings are still on the piston and it would be up to you if you wanted to re-use them. I haven't miced anything but it's all in great shape. The cylinder has no ring ridge. The piston compression is rated at 10.8 and I had no problems with detonation. You'll need to use you're pin and clips. $125.00 shipped.

Stuff

Joel

As noted before

XL stuff, I have a Venolia piston for the XL. A transmission less 1 bad shift fork.

XR stuff 1 stock take off piston, won't work for you because the cylinder is bad. The 660 piston requires a bigger sleeve. To much $$$ for ya.

XR650l take off pistons. Wrong animal.

The E-Bay lead I sent ya for the +1mm 600 piston.

Or Bruce's offer above.
