Counter Shaft Sprocket
You have it backwards. The folks on the XR650l thread replace the OE sprocket with the XR650r sprocket or it's copy because it's wider and thus has more engagement with the splines. The OE XR600 and XR650l sprockets are the same width. It's the aftermarket sprockets that are narrower and made out of a harder material that leads to increased countershaft wear.
New shaft ![]() 16,000 miles

A decent xr 97. Seems gently used. Rode it a bit off road and shortly on the fwy. Handled it all..well! Surprised they stopped making this or something like it.ru
If I figure out how to post photos with a phone .. [Img/]http://lh3.ggpht.com/-aI17bXi6SXc/T1PmJ0CsKlI/AAAAAAAABRg/nlYJ-fLPUdQ/s1024/100_4976.jpg[/img]

Wearing the splines
Too many bikes.
Makes me wanna take a look at each countershaft just in case, before it's too late. Just got back from a dualsport ride. Kind of a county dirt roads thing. It was 5 riders 77 miles round trip.I didn't use the 600...went way back and rode the 74 TR5MX Avenger. Some dust, some mud and stream crossings. Beer and pizza waiting for us at the end of the ride. 70 degree day and all is good. Didn't want to use up any knobbie depth riding streets with the XR, so... ![]() ![]() Yeah , my first big bore thumper! 35 years as a dirt bike, plated in 07.Fun to ride, but she can't do what the xr does. Dualsport ha, not by today's standards, that's why I searched out a plated xr6

Quiet muffler
I have a 2000 xr600r with a supertrap isde2 silencer that is way too loud. I think there may be a rear baffle missing, does anyone have pics of one with the quiet insert.
What are the quietest aftermarket silencers for this bike. Unfortunately I traded my stocker to a friend for this one . Has anyone used one from a 450x or even a drz-s or another bike ? |

Just made some enquiries..the local large bike stores in Melbourne only stock JT CS Sprockets
But...they will order in a OEM 14T if you want to pay a bit more. So...my bike has always had JT sprockets most likely Would like a 15T if possible but Honda don't have them so I might have to try a 14T They are AU$52 for OEM CS Sprocket in 14T ...Anyone?

Countershaft Wear
Was this warn shaft abused with wrong/after market sprockets? I read that many of these bikes get high mileage and presume that 13,000 miles would be a-typical for a reasonably well looked after machine? What's the PBI brand like from XR's Only (cheap except for the freight to Oz) Can I expect to change out chain & sprockets more frequently if choosing a cheap brand?...but I am prepared to do that if it delays splitting the case to replace warn gears and CS. Thanks again for your help guys ![]()

Get Moose Racing steel sprockets for XR650R. Not case hardened, so you don't destroy the countershaft so much. They're something like $40 on EBay. I bought a 15T and a 13T

Are you saying we should get together for a vintage ride?

Since that engine was coming apart it made no sense to leave that shaft in there even if it could get some more miles. There is to much work involved to replace the shaft. My guess is the PO wore out the OE sprocket and then used aftermarket gears. You saw the results. OE gears are available in 14, XR600 and 15, XR650l. XR650r in 14.

I will not risk another aftermarket primary sprocket on any bike. If it has not already been noted, I should mention that the fine-spline sprocket pictured above will not fit on all of these bikes. My '88 XR600, and my '79 XL500 have six-spline shafts.

Well lucky I caught this before too late...coz we were heading for major work in the near future on a bike that has been otherwise looked after and low miles(it's about 15,000Kms)
The splines are quite visibly warn(I did need my glasses to see it) ..probably about half gone ..comparing with Steve's photo. Sooo..thanks heaps for this great forum(and TT) which has renewed my interest in the bike. I mentioned the issue to the bike shop and they said they have always sold aftermarket I will also use a good paste on the splines and check the wear frequently..any suggestions on lubing the splines welcome...cheers
