Opps

Turn the engine COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. Do not go CLOCKWISE if you miss TDC.

Sorry for the screw-up. The steaks were on the BBQ and I was in a hurry to post.

I don't know if this helps, but with the XR650R, if you mess up initially, the manual says to turn the flywheel counter-clockwise ~3 times before trying to line up "T" again.

I've got my toes crossed for ya!

Can you identify this piston?

Guys I need help identifying this piston. This is on my 1985 XR600 that I picked up used last fall. It ran, but 2nd gear is gone and it smoked bad. I expected to find a scored and abused OEM piston and jug, but to my suprise, it has a newer piston and a clean bore job, so I suspect that it just needs rings. I can see that it is first-size overbore by the .50 mm on the top.

So can anyone tell me what brand of piston this is so I can order the replacement rings? Or are all the brands the same when it comes to ring sizes. ( I would probably order Wiseco if that's the case )

Thanks for any assistance...

Piston

That is a Wiseco +.5mm piston. It's an older part #. You can order directly from Wiseco. Just tell them the number on the piston and they will set you up with the correct rings. If I were you a light hone for the cylinder and some new valve guide seals. Wiseco has top end gasket sets also. Ask if thet sets include valve guide seals. One stop shopping!!

Nice find, man. I love the looks of the XR600s, even more than the XL600s.

My guess is that it is a Wiseco. I put a wiseco in my XR600 engine and it looked like that except it had an indented top area, as it was a 9:1 compression ratio piston. Yours has a raised center and valve cutaways, so it is probably a wiseco 10.5 or 11:1. I don't have a photo of my wiseco so you could see the skirt pattern, but here are some photos of Gregster's Wiseco 11:1 from his rebuild thread on NBDSC:

Now here is another forged aftermarket piston called a Venolia. I'd say it's definitely not one of these. This one was for an XL600.

I also typed in Wiseco 4366P2 like it says on top of your piston, and I found a site that had a list of Wiseco pistons for sale, and 4366P2 ws listed as fitting the XR600, see below.
PISTON M09750 XR600R '85-01 3839XH
4366P2 $207.95
Looks like I answered it for you!

BTW, Gregster's piston is a 11to1 101mm slug.

Nice Venolia piston you have there. Even has my initials in it, SS

$207.95 is list. Same price as directly from Wiseco.

Wow! You guys jumped on that like the general just gave you the orders!

Thanks for the fast reply. Now will Steve or Zombie kindly fly to Wisconsin to help me install the new transmission gears. I have rebuilt top-ends before, but never had to split the cases.

I do have new valve seals for the head already, and a good transmission gear set from an XL600. This thing was just too complete to not rebuild.

I am intrigued by that Venolia piston. I didn't know they ever made slugs for these bikes, although I suppose it could be a special order.

Engine ID

I have another question regarding that old 85 XR of mine. Is there any resource that allows you to tell what year your engine is using the serial number stamped on the engine case? I know that the 85 XR's had black engines, but this one is silver. It still has the dual carbs, so it is not newer than an 87, but I am wondering if it is an 87 engine, or did someone just do an awesome blasting job on the 85 engine to strip every fleck of paint off???

Looks like it is probably an '87 engine. I don't see any evidence that it was ever painted or media blasted. The black and red engines commonly have overspray inside the cases, side covers, and head.

Damn it. I just spent a long time writing a long post only to visit this site and find out that it is simply an '87 engine. I forgot about that magic year being the only Honda X-bike having a silver engine and dual carbs.

## Question

Is the engine ## supposed to be the same as the frame ## ?
My frame is very close to the article that ZS put up but the engine is very diff.
Do XL ##'s vary much from XR's ? engine = PDO3E-5100xxx & frame is a proper JH2PE0409FK number
