So went for a really great ride today, about 30 minutes south of me. The recent rain had certainly destroyed the road a bit and made riding on it fun. But I rode on the motorway at 100km/h (60mph) for 30 minutes down and back, as well as the time exploring this new track.

Anyway on the way home I started to hear a clunking noise coming from the engine. Not good.
Got home and drained the oil and only got 1L out of it. So I assume I have probably binned my valve train from lack of lubrication?

Since the oil was full when I left for the ride, I don't really see how I could've burnt through 0.9L of oil in only a couple of hours riding. Yes I was at freeway speeds for a moderate time and the offroad was quite demanding, but surely it wouldn't be just from consume oil? Doesn't blow smoke on start-up or any other time.

Anyway not sure what to do. Remember that parts are fantastically expensive here, so if I am going to buy something then I'd prefer to do it correctly (and in one go if I'm buying from overseas).

Thanks,
John

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooo:c ry

we are here to help,

I wish I could help a lot by being close by but Im sure we can all pitch in

I have used pistons and rings, cylinder, a bunch of stuff you could use for your build...

its shipping that is killer but privately sent by regular post might be better than chosing ebay or whatnot

take the valve cover off and see what the cam and rockers look like

see for scuffing on the lower journal, etc...

steve will be here shortly

let us know

Damn John,

Hope you didn´t fry anything !!!

If the bike´s not leaking oil, you must have burnt it, but that much oil in that timespace should make for some black fumes I´d say. No evidence of that?

Time to pull the top end and cylinder to inspect for damage. Doesn't sound good.

good luck

1 tip
rinse the engine and frame off or at least clean all the dirt off so that when you start jiggling the engine no crap get thrown down the head and cylinder and stuff

let us know and post pics!

First look at the top end

Hmm so I got the rocker cover off and it doesn't like good, although not really a suprise.

Now I'm not very good with telling when stuff is buggered so if I could have your expert opinions on whether it is roasted or still ok that would be fantastic.

At TDC, cam chain shows this...stretched? Since it had a 630 kit put in ~9500km ago I'd be surprised that it would be this gone already, I thought cam chains lasted ages?

The cam seems to have some burnt lobes...so I need a new cam I guess?

Couple of the faces don't look great either:

Finally the centre journal look kind of worn, although I've seen other photos where people keep using it...so is this fine?

Everything I've seen looks consistent with low oil (which I knew when I only got 1L out of it)...it even smells like burnt oil which is depressing. Should I take the head off too and check out the piston and valves?

Also I didn't really want to say this before but here goes: I also noticed thed it would get stuck in gear...like I'd be in 3rd and I'd shift up or down and the lever would move with no resistance and it wouldn't drop into the next gear. Then after a couple of minutes it'd be ok again...please tell me this doesn't mean I have to split the case.

Also Christian I might take you (and others if offering) on postage of parts. It'd might be cheaper just to get the parts collected together overseas and shipped as one lot. Thumpertalk has a fair bit of stuff and good shipping when all together, like $60ish AUD, and eBay's cheaper again but obviously that is part for part and would end up running into the $150+ bracket for all the shipping.

Comments, suggestions and criticisms welcome.

John

Cases

Yes it does. There is a fine spring on the shift drum that goes bad and will leave the engine stuck in a gear and nothing short of a full tear down to get to it will do.

You need to pull the head and cylinder to access damages. The cam and rockers are toast. All to common.

Why? Because the rings on the piston took a shit and all of the oil went out the pipe while you weren't watching.

BTW... I'm the guy that has been helping Christian with his engine for the last couple of years. If you like I can assemble whatever you need and send it to you. I am a sharp shopper and know all of the tricks to these bikes.

How is that helpful? The truth may hurt but it's better then being led down the garden path.

Fix it right the first time.

Do it once correctly.

Who wants the expense of gaskets and additional down time because you didn't fix it right?

Not me.

Haha thanks mate, pandering to my lazy, cheap side. I like that!

However, in this case I think I'll have to suck it up and do as mcma111 says. You're right, the truth dose hurt! Oh well.
I definitively might take you up on that offer of getting all the stuff too, I guess I'll just compile a list and go from there.

First things first...how the fuck do the get the head off? Taken all the bolts outs, given some love taps, no movement...tips?

Cheers,

John
