Ok, here's a new tag to go and get. We couldn't get right to the site as I didn't want to get arrested and also out of respect. There are several monuments in this area and many are to fallen service men/women and the ships they served on.

I'm looking for a specific monument. It's the one dedicated to what happened on 22 November 1975 (it would be too easy to just put the pic here, I want ya'll to do some research). There was a severe collision at sea between a CV and a CG resulting in 8 lives lost. The collision resulted in a change to our carrier fleet and also significant changes in the way surface ships in general were constructed. I first learned what the "pole" just forward of the island is for when I was qualifying Officer of the Deck onboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT.

All carriers now have this "pole" since this collision as an aide for other ships to help identify the correct aspect ratio of the ship, especially at night.

Hmmmm...Bellknap?

Not to hijack this thread, but the Navy learned during WWII that aluminum is no good for ships. Then used it again anyway, like for the Bellknap. And look what we are using now for the new ships.
