Motocross Immortals

Maybe some of you have seen this, maybe not. It's a pretty good look back at many of the motorcross stars (and others in the industry) that are no longer with us, compiled by Jody Weisel.

I remember many of them from racing the SoCal MX circuits in the 70's, including a good friend Bob Elliott.

It's about 12.5 minutes. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

that was awesome thanks for the heads up.

I was at Mid Ohio Vintage Days in 2007 and had a nice chat with Don Jones. I was a big Gary Jones fan and knew who Don was. I had my Motocross America book with me and asked him to sign it and he did. He was in a golf cart with Mike Runyards dad who was 100 years old. Don pointed that out to me, and he was also with Dicky Newell, and another guy. I forget who was who but one was the Yamaha Team Manager when Gary was riding Yamaha's and the other guy was Grand National Champ in 53 or thereabouts. He asked if I wanted them to sign the book and I said sure why not. He really enjoyed pointing out who these other guys were. And he enjoyed checking out the book and looking at the pictures. Real nice encounter, glad I had the chance. I knew Wymann Priddy had passed. Heart attack I think. Donnie Schmidt didn't make 30. I read he was so into eating healthy he'd eat salads witn no dressing. And gone before 30. Domokos in a hang gliding accident? Sucks.

motocross rules.

Thanks for the link!

Thanks for posting this link. Kind of humbling in a way, I'm about the same age as most the guys shown and I'm still walking around and ticking. Come to think of it 3 or 4 of my former racing buddies have passed way before their time. Guess you need to live every day like it's your last.

The Jones' were definitely one of the first families of American motocross. Don was a racer in his own right, and always there for Gary and DeWayne. He was instrumental in so many developments over the years.

A lot of heroes in that tribute video...

Bob Elliott was a go-fast guy originally on the SoCal MX circuits. My family owned motorcycle shops with Steve Hurd (famed desert racer), and for awhile sponsored Bob (and several others) on Monark's and Huskys. Bob eventually was picked up by Suzuki as a test rider, with Marty Moates and Bob Hannah. Bob E. raced the Nationals both as a privateer and semi-factory support - fast enough to be in the top ten. Sadly, the pressures of racing and life overcame him, and he took his own life. But he was respected and regarded well by all that knew him.

What are the dates for the Mid-Ohio Vintage Days? Sounds like a place to be...

Cool video, brings back memories. I have a tone of slides I took at Unadilla back in the early 70's. Need to get them digitized.
