I have always wanted a Ducati like that, I remember the first one I ever saw.

My new KLX seat came in today, I hope to get it over the upholsterer by Tuesday. It's going to be so much more comfortable on long rides, can't wait to take it out. Next I need a pipe, jet kit, and the 3 gallon tank from IMS.

Chuck,

Saw your old set of tires and they didn't look half bad but your new ones look badass! I was over to Eppa's getting a new rear Heidenau 60 Scout put on this early evening.

My handy litttle socket wrench wouldn't get the job done, no, but two thin wrenches do work.

Hey John.,
The old death wings had 3800 miles on them. They passed inspection two weeks ago but when I took them off road last week all they did was spin in the dirt and mud. No grip at all. Eppa is keeping them for me so they are not being thrown away just yet. If anyone needs a set they can have them. You up for some riding tomorrow? We are still looking for a good location. West Point is still an option.

I know of a little bit of trail here in Chester but would be up for more. Why don't we pick a time and place to meet and discuss then. That way at least we are not paralized trying to figure out where.

Since I think we are all coming for different directions, I suggest meeting over at Poe's at 10:30.

Yes, all bikes welcome at Babes of Carytown (3166 W Cary St) at 9AM for breakfast. Parking at Wachovia across the street from Babes. Usually 40+ bikes in parking lot. I'm the newsletter guy so I gotta be there.

Hatton Ferry.

Me and Downer took the long gravelly way out to 56 and up to Wingina today. headed north following the "west" bank up to Scottsville - James river road. We checked out a few dead end gravel roads before we came across this sign that said "Hatton Ferry" so we went to check it out too.

Never seen anything like it.. It's an old style water current powered ferry. Tiny, about 16' x 40' deck I'm guessing - held 2 cars and 2 bikes for our crossing and that was about full capacity. Only about a 2 foot draft which was too much a couple places..

It works off a cable strung across the river that the ferry rides back and forth on. The ferryboat has two short cables at both ends attached to pulleys that run on the cross-the-river cable. The ferry man can take up slack in the either of the short cables causing the boat to sit at an angle to the current which acts against the hull pusing it.. one way takes it one way across the river then turn the other way to bring it back. Sort of like wind in the sail of a sailboat. No motor at all. Pretty dang cool and smart way to use the power of the river.

The ferry man and his wife seemed very friendly and wanted to drum up visitors. "take pictures and put them on facebook". They said today was the first day of the year they were running it.. Lucky us, it was cool.

here it is ready to load (yes that's the whole thing). You can see the cables going up to the right.

Loading a mini van

Bikes on board.. the yellow poles on the right are used to help if you get stuck on a rock.. which we did. I got to help push with the pole.

It's basicaly free, but we made donations of a few bucks each

Looking up river
