Nice pics. Looks like a great ride to a nice spot!

Recon trip this Saturday!

Barring an all-day monsoon on Saturday, I plan on heading west to recon the dual-sport route I will be leading during the Morton’s Spring Fling next month. I will take 60 to 56 and then start the loop that travels up to Nellysford, up and around Afton to Sherando, down some gravel roads back to 56W, past Crabtree Falls, down Irish Creek Rd towards Buena Vista, head south past Panther Falls, down to Otter Creek, up FR 39 to Alhambra road and then back down 56 to head home.
The loop is 108 miles plus the 4+ hours (208 miles) travel time to and from Chester to Shady Lane where 56 and 151 meet. My flexible plan is to be home by 6:30 pm.
The dual sport sections are tame, nice, level gravel/dirt roads to suit all levels of riding, although rain could make things interesting. All are welcome to come along. This will be a leisurely ride with a lunch stop. I plan on leaving Chester around 0800. Locals can meet me at The Whistle Stop gas station just south of the intersection of Old Lane and Chester Rd (across from the Food Lion). I will gladly stop and pick up anyone else anywhere along 60 (Midlothian Turnpike) as well.

I have started to sort through the 1800 pictures and videos from my awesome RawHyde/Base Camp Alpha/Mojave trip. I am going to post a few of them with a brief ride report soon…

Hm, actually, I'm thinking I might need a thermos of some sort that I can throw in a pannier or top case that won't make a mess when I go off-road. Apart from today's ride, my recent riding fun has led to loose battery terminals, a leaky front fork, missing tool pieces/parts, and an exploded cookie; I understand that a gatorade bottle didn't survive one of the roads I was on (not sure where the straps and license plate were lost). I think what I'm looking for is something that won't fly off, break to pieces, or leak when agitated, perhaps bomb proof. The kruzer kaddy itself fits the bill, but anything I might put in it probably not so much. Anyone know if some such thing exists?

From expierience I know not to put beverages in cans in topcases. More so if my camera is in the same luggage. Beverages seem to fare better in a tankbag. Platic bottles with no carbonation seem to survive.

Should you ever feel the need for self-induced frustration...

pull the carbs on a 2002 Kawasaki Vulcan 750.

What a royal PITA. Took a little over an hour once the air filters were removed. Absolutely no room whatsoever in that tight vee to easily get them out. I love Kawasaki, but they damned sure weren't thinking when they put that part of the bike together.

And yes, that is blood:

On a more pleasant note, I have lawyer reviewing my LLC paperwork. If all is in order, it will be filed tomorrow.

That's what I thought til one of the guy's gatorade bottles failed him on some mildly bumpy gravel. I'm starting to see a two-part solution taking shape: 1) a nifty gizmo along the lines that teeter or dawgwhat have suggested for taking lattes down to the river (thanks for the ideas!), and 2) gatorade bottles wrapped in bubble wrap -- or maybe a camelback? -- in a side/top case for off-road rides. (The tank bag approach makes sense, but I have yet to warm up to the idea of having anything much taller than a map holder on the tank in front of me.)

My buddy and I are going to see Shinedown at The National next Tuesday. The wives didn't realize that it was on a school night and now they don't want to go. Let me know if you want them, $35/each.

I have a Green Stanley Classic Stainless Steel Thermos. It was my Grandfathers. It's easily 40+ years old and is awesome at keeping things hot and doesn't mind getting bumped around. It has been on duck hunting trips, flyfishing, vacations, Spring Gobbler/Deer Hunting. It's been everywhere. Can be bought on ebay and elsewhere.

I've got one of those too. I originally bought it to put in the back of a kayak for winter paddling. They even make a wide mouth version for soup/stew!

Brenda, any steel lined themos would work well. They even sell smaller steel lined ones at Starbucks, or used to. Don't ask me how I know...
It just has to be secure so it doesn't bounce around and break the plastic lid/stopper. I'd say getting slammed around on those trails last weekend is what killed the Gatorade bottle, along with the tool tube, license plate(s), bungees, KLR trans, etc., etc....
