I love Hugh Laurie on House. He's a brilliant curmudgeon doctor who HATES patients. Won't talk to them during diagnosis. Why? Because they all lie.

Same when buying a bike, or sometimes when working on one for someone else. NEVER trust the DPO. (dreaded previous owner) Here are some of the ones I hear all the time when I go to buy a bike:

1) It was running when I parked it last fall.
2) It's only been in storage for 1 or 2 years (and the last inspection on it is 1986)
3) There's nothing wrong with it that I know of
4) I always drain the carbs when I park it for the winter.
5) Just clean the carbs and get a battery and it should start right up
6) I'm just selling it for a friend so I don't know anything about it
7) It's never been down that I know of
8) I've never worked on it so it must be all stock
9) It's had all its services by factor mechanics (but no proof thereof)

Feel free to jump in here and offer the best lines you've had told to you.

So I don't really listen to sellers anymore. I look at their garage (tells you a lot about how they treat things). I check the title to make sure the VIN is correct. I do a visual on all external parts to see how many times it has hit the ground. I sometime take my own battery and jumper cables to test electrics (especially if it isn't a running bike).

But most importantly,I ALWAYS take a compression tester and have researched what the compression should be for that bike. That will tell you more about the health of an engine than anything else. And it provides hard proof that you can argue with the owner about on his price. You can't hide valve issues, or burnt rings, or a sadly worn engine from the compression tester. And if the bike doesn't have a kickstarter, bringing that battery and cables lets you at least spin it over to do the compression test.

Okay, Vent off. Carry on. Feel free to add your own words of wisdom.

Guy?
OK ... Waiting for "the rest of the story".

Anyone care to fill me in on what the plan is as far as camping in the hope that i can make it?

Chuck and Eddy are leading. Chuck mentioned at BITB yesterday about possibly leaving Friday afternoon in time to find a place to camp before dark. Does anyone know for sure if we'll be heading to the mountains Friday afternoon or Saturday morning? I'm good either way.

At this point, I could leave on Friday also.

I think you have a solid understanding of the used bike market I'm not a big wheeler dealer but like to pull a plug and take a whiff/look see....certainly the surroundings as you say are tell tale for sure...battery condition can be a clue as well as tires....paper work says it was last registered in '86 but it ran good last year ....my favorite is to ask who did the maintenance and when the last time that was done..........have I got a deal for you

Hmmm? I'm not selling anything, but think I'll go take a look at the condition of my garage.

My biggest challenge is being a bottom feeder. Unlike Eddy, who buys nothing but the best, I usually buy old, weird stuff that is NEVER running. Sometimes the owner can't even tell me the last time it did run. So when you do that, you are truly buying that "pig in a poke", and need to do your due diligence.

Sometimes you win. Sometimes....... you rant.

LOL! That's funny Jeff. What's got you so steamed about your last purchase? It's YOU who taught ME about certain things to watch out for when buying used and the importance of using a compression tester. The only reason I buy the nicest examples of what I can find is that
1. History has taught me that going cheap and "fixing it up" usually ends up costing more than simply buying a nice bike from the get go.
2. Right now, I don't have the time or skills to tackle a restoration or dead bike.

My mechanical skills end just after "basic recommended maintenance" and if the problem is electrical, forget it! I almost literally killed myself in front of the wife and kids last summer playing handyman at home with 240V. This is my current relationship with electricity... I leave it to Guy from now on!

As far as the riding this weekend, I am planning on leaving Saturday, I am not too fond of riding in deer country after dusk so no Friday evening departure for me. I'm up for meeting at Chubbies at 0800? If that's too early, just let me know, I am very flexible. It is my intention to scout out a couple of gravel roads near Natural Bridge. Nothing stupid, I still haven't lowered my GS and I don't want to give Chuck anything to post from his GoPro!
