MotoComm and RocketMate
I ordered the RocketMate K-06D headset to use with my GMRS radio on the KLR (based on the MCN recommendation). This setup works great.
In an attempt to add some tunes, I purchased an audio mixer and a mess of patch cords and pin converters so I could use the GMRS and Walkman at the same time. This was also successful but a bit of a snake pit in the tank bag This week it dawned on me that MotoComm sells a headset that looks just like the RocketMate AND they sell a patch cord for adding a second stereo audio source. See it here. I received one of these cables today and can confirm it works with the RocketMate too. Now I have GMRS and tunes with much less hassle.

The Baehr Capo seems like a great Bike2Bike plus music system, but what is with the MONO music input on all their stuff? I'm an audio engineer, and I don't want to listen to anything other than talk radio in MONO! Sheesh. Though I guess at $700, STEREO (1950s technology) would have cost $1400!
I could buy and throw away four chatterboxes for that price. I guess on a $15k bike people can do this, but not on my $4k KLR.No one seems to mention the Collettes much. They have a three year no questions asked warranty and a 30 day trial. Seems like a worthwhile risk. If only they had a 12v recharger for when I'm away from civilization for a few days, and a non-boom mic option. And they have a full stereo version coming out this spring for $250.

The point here is that you don't need to spend a grand to get a usable intercom. And you'll get Stereo! Welcome to the 1950's! |

I've used the Collett, Autocom, and J&M systems.
If I was buying one today, I'd buy the J&M, no question. I owned that first, had it on various bikes over the span of 8 years and 100k+ miles. Toward the end I had an issue where the intercom would cut out when it was really hot. J&M replaced it, free, out of warranty. Later I thought I wanted the features of the Autocom. Dropped $800-ish on that instead of a newer J&M. I don't think I ever went a full month without issues with that piece of junk. Plugs are poorly connected, and kept breaking wires. I am sure I replaced every connector on it, or close to it. Its performance was pretty good, but reliability really bad. The Collett is good for a portable system. I have nothing bad to say about it at all, and it is cheap. The company has good support. I don't like portable systems and the hassle with that. It certainly was a lot better than the Chatterbox junk I've tried (never owned a Chatterbox though).

That new J&M handlebar CB/intercomm/music amp seem like a pretty sweet rig. Should be reasonably moveable between my three bikes with some extra power cords and antennae.

Ok, I've had about 4 years experiance with the Airrider system. I like it, I had one on my RT and my wife has one on her RS. The only down side to it, in my mind is the size of the box and the numerous cords. If you use all of the possiblities, it'll fill a good sized tank bag. It is very durable. As with all the other units, using CB is iffy on it. I've had the Air rider, Autocom Active 7, and currently have the J&M Solo CB. I went with CB since I ride with Gold Wingers about half of the time. Hope this helps. |
