Wise advice.

My particular situation brings me to, but not into, the downtown tunnel/steel bridge bottleneck every evening. I count my lucky stars breezing back home into Norfolk every night (from V.B.) via Waterside drive as everyone's stacked-up/trapped in the right-hand lanes. If I lived across the water I'd be royally screwed.

I retract the above statement. 1/2 buzzed me realizes that indeed I did not have enough beer in the fridge. I should have risked a few dents in my 20 year old Cherokee.

Mild winters are exactly what we're looking for. The extreme cold is really starting to bug my injured leg, so a little heat and humidity is what the doctor ordered.

Kid is heading off to college this fall, so we are no longer too concerned about local schools, but I have read good things about what is available.

Cost of living in Anchorage is really quite high, housing included... I checked the cost of living calculators between Anchorage and Norfolk, and most seem to indicate we could take some cut in pay and still maintain our standard of living. Military is also a big employer here, and I appreciate the insight.

Wife is a licensed counselor. I am currently a customer service supervisor at a major telecom company, but looking to step out of the customer service roll...
Hey and welcome! I'm a licensed professional counselor and work/live in Williamsburg. My wife and I are happy here and my personal opinion is that I'd rather not live in Virginia if I had to work on the Southside (Norfolk, VA Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, etc). I commuted for about 3 months down to VB and it sucked. From Williamsburg, you can be in Virginia beach or Richmond in an hour. Mountains are about 2+hrs away. PM me if you'd like and I'd be happy to talk to you about jobs up here. My place is looking and it's a decent place.

Nice meeting you today, Bloochdog. Sorry I was in a hurry though, as my roomate was giving me the business about getting home. I think maybe he had a date or something.

We have been pretty lucky up here in that the housing crisis really hasn't affected us much. Our property values flattened, but never really went down. We will most likely put the house on the market this spring (early summer by VA standards).

The jobs part is where we start to panic a bit. Wife is applying for one she found, but obviously we have no idea WHERE the jobs will be located. Ah, the joys of moving... Are there tolls/toll roads in the area to be wary of? Or is it just congestion in general...

18 degrees and sunny-ish up here. Snowed last night... Just another day in AK!
If ya look in the greater Richmond area for jobs/housing you will be closer to great riding, just sayin...

That X-Country is a nifty bike for sure. I was hoping the heated grips would "fall off" at some point while it was in the shop, but it never happened.
