Yes, Kurt hit an animal of some type. But, that being said, booby traps are far too common and must be stopped. The economic impact of the SCORE sanctioned events in that area are pretty significant. I hope that SCORE tries to address the issue with local authorities. If that means they need to threaten to pull out, then I believe that's what SCORE should do. The real catch-22 in that approach is the financials of the thing. If SCORE were to try to run those races in the States, I'm sure just the insurance fees alone would skyrocket to the point where entry fees would out of reach for 80% of the current field. That doesn't even account for leases, bureaucratic nightmares, enviro nazis......

There just isn't too many places where those events could be run, to the scale they are run today, north of the border. And fewer entries means fewer sponsors, which means less dollars. My point is that SCORE needs to step up.

The Dakar was moved because of political unrest. It's not the same race it once was. It isn't the test of man and machine it used to be. The move forced out the Malle-moto riders for the most part. Stages are shorter, and made for TV now. I bring this up, because the race was moved, and now it's not the same. The Baja races are unique in the world, and it would be pretty difficult to capture that elsewhere. I just SCORE can come up with something.

Shannon Update

I saw Shannon this morning. He wishes all thanks for the letters and Web wishes. He enjoys reading them. He is really improving. His current discharge date is 6 Dec. I visited and left a few magazines. The therapy is tiring but I think that is good. They have him walking between parallel bars. PM me if you want to send a card or something and I'll confirm the address if you cannot figure it out. I think he may be up to getting on adventure rider in the next few weeks.

Mike

Good to hear!

I just got back from Nags Head. Went down Friday and stayed all weekend. Had great weather. Spend Saturday morning putting around the island, visiting Wanchese, Collington, and a few other places. Did my usual art-shop hopping, local eatery tasting, etc. Picked up some fresh seafood Saturday evening, and treated everyone at the house to steamed clams, shrimp w/ white wine & old bay, and bay scallops cooked in whatever was left in the pan from the clams and shrimp. If anyone's down there, check out the Sugar Shack Seafood Market. GREAT people, tasty food, reasonable prices, and a good view to boot!

I'll be posting up some pics over the next week, probably. But until then, here was my departing shot from the house this afternoon. SO glad I got the Dakar for longer trips. No way I would take the Duc down there.

I just rolled in the door from a week in Orlando FL. Gorgeous weather (I tried packing some to let loose around here). An absolute waste of time for owning a motorcycle down there. Unless they just want a street bike to dodge traffic with. I feel sorry for them. It makes me appreciate that we only have a couple of hours to travel to find the really nice stuff.

I ran out of gas today. I was rolling down 64, and the bike sputters. "No problem" I think. I reach down, and switch to reserve, but it doesn't help. I coast to a stop.

When I stop, I pull the gasline off. ON = RES = OFF = no gas flow. I start to think maybe I am just a dumbass who confused ON for RES and ran out of gas because of stupid.

I call for rescue. My lovely wife brings me more gas. I ride home.

Later, I drain the tank and remove it, and I can hear something rolling around inside.

The ON tube had fallen out of the petcock, so ON was equal to reserve. I was doomed to run out of gas, no matter what position the petcock was on. In the picture, you can see the loose tube in the little tray.

At least I don't think I ran out of gas because I am a dumbass anymore.

I carry a 1 liter empty orange juice container full of spare gas in one of my sidebags at all times. Never needed it yet, but ...
Glad your rescue team was able to assist.

I've always thought the RotoPax fuel cells were a fantastic idea.

But since I don't have the Wolfman racks, I have one of these coming:

Realized after forgetting to reset my trip the other week that it would be nice to have a little reserve to get me somewhere in a pinch.

Well shoot.

I already ordered one, so it's on it's way. I guess I'll hope I got a good one. If it breaks though, I know not to replace it.
