I arrived in Alaska in late August and I was pleasantly surprised by the light mosquito activity. My worst encounters with mosquitoes occurred at campsites in Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana as I was traveling to Alaska.

Although I was lucky with the lack of mosquitoes in Alaska, I was not so lucky with the weather... I encountered rain almost everyday while I was in Canada and Alaska. The Dalton Highway was a muddy mess when I traveled to and from the Arctic Circle.

Were there many other motorcycles on the Dalton Highway in June? I did not see a single motorcycles on the Dalton Highway on the day that I went to the Arctic Circle. What kind of temperatures did you have at Prudhoe Bay in June?

Who knows,,, maybe another trip to Alaska,, or at least to the Canadian Rockies (mountain range). Banff, Jasper and Kootenay National Parks in Canada are beautiful areas to visit.

How long did you take for that trip?
The trip was 11,719 miles. It took me 30-days to complete (29 riding days, 1 maintenance day).

My trip was a bare bones, no fills adventure. I camped the entire trip. The pace of the trip allowed for very little free time. Most people would probably want to take more than 30-days for such a lengthy trip.

I crossed the US/Canadian border in western Montana. I traveled less than 50 miles on the Interstate Highway System and I did very little traveling during the hours of darkness. I averaged 404 miles per riding day. My longest riding day was 596 miles. My shortest riding day was 168 miles.

Cold in June

I only saw 2 other motorcycles that weren't in our group in the 2+ weeks that I was in Alaska. Both were guys on GSA's from the east coast.

Prudhoe Bay/Deadhorse Camp was as cold and crappy as expected. It was near freezing with about 20 degrees for a wind chill but the gusts felt a lot colder than that.. especially when speeding down the highway. It was funny thinking that was June weather and imagining how bad it must be in the actual winter months.

The weird thing was leaving Prudhoe Bay at 30 degrees in the morning and then arriving down south at Coldfoot Camp in the afternoon where they had a record high of 80 degrees. Thank goodness for layers of gear.

So, Prudhoe Bay and Deadhorse Camp are now a "been there and done that" kinda thing. Not somewhere I particularly want to go back to. Alaska rocks and I'll definitely go back and spend more time there.. just don't feel the need to rock the Dalton highway again anytime soon.

Well, here's my lame-ass photos of my tiny trip this weekend.

Our motley crew of bikes. 3 friends on SV's, one on a Honda Magna, and my Sport. Met up with one more friend on an SV in Waynesboro.

I've decided that out of everything in my life, and all the places I can think of, this is my zen spot.

Right there in the saddle of a packed-up bike. Granted, I don't have tires on a rear rack, and mud on the fenders. I don't have everything I need to survive (mostly camera equipment here), nor do I have the tools to perform roadside fix-its. But I like my spot. I rather enjoy hunkering down in the saddle, leaning forward, and just going. As I bombed down Rt. 10 from Hopewell to Surry, trying to catch the 9:30am ferry from Scottland, I had my epiphany.

Someday, it'll be on a "cooler" bike. Someday, I'll be heading to Alaska, or Machu Pichu, or wherever. Someday I'll be writing about the strange but funny character I met today.

But today, it's right here on this bike.

Dude, nice pics and any trip is a great trip. I wish I would have had more time to get out and ride this weekend.
