So, I'm heading down to Hatteras for a family beach house rental thing for the T-Day weekend. The Misses and little ones are heading down tomorrow after school is out and I am going down on the bike on Thursday because I need to work a full day tomorrow.
Due to Sandy and Nor 'Easters since then, Route 12 to Hatt is only open to 4WD at low tide, as I'm sure you've seen the news. So it looks like a long ass wait and ferry ride from Stumpy Point, NC to Hatt (2 hours+ wait!). Having never been on ferry with a bike, but having read about it, I hear that they can often squeeze motorcycles in around the odd spaces that a car won't fit into and they want motorcycles to pull up to the front of line so they can plan their load accordingly. So my protocol question is this. Have any of you had experience with the NCDOT ferries and what are their procedures for loading motorcycles? Do they want you to slip upfront so they can figure out where to put you, or do you need to wait in line with all the soccer moms and their mini-vans? I don't want to tick off any impatient cagers at the ferry line, but if I can slip through more quickly due to my limited footprint, that would be cool!

Jamestown ferries, bikes get loaded just like cars, staying in line, and go where the ferry workers motion for you to go. Hope this helps.

I know it is on the Hatteras to Ocracoke route but the ferry office in Hatteras might know. Their number is (252) 986-2353.

Thanks for the info, there are no reservations due to this being a temporary "emergency" route. Anyone can use it, but residents and work/delivery vehicles get priority (as they should).

I have done it a couple of times (Hatt-Ocra) with my bike. They put us wherever...I think the time there were 3 of us the put in the car line all 3 abreast.

If it's just you they will probably approach you prior to loading and pull you up front....maybe

I know a few people that used the Hatteras ferry recently..... waited about 10 hours to get on! The delivery trucks and school buses were priority.

God knows I've NEVER gotten priority at the Jamestown Ferry. In fact, I'm quite certain that on several occassions, they've made sure there's plenty of vehicles in front of me when offloading into Surry. I've been in the front at times, and they'll never let me go first. This results in me playing hopscotch with traffic towards town, or more often than not, just pulling over and waiting 5 minutes for traffic to clear.
