I found a really neat road today.

After riding it for a while I ran into this trail.....nice surprise.

Followed it for a long way....it got me down a couple times.

I rode it for quite a while and came out to this sign.

Sand sucks........but there is so much legal off road riding here in Michigan compared to Indiana it is welcomed

sand is great

#1 Always keep your feet on the pegs, always !!
#2 Stand UP !!! get your ass off the seat.
#3 Lean back, You are steering with your REAR tire in sand, not the FRONT.
So put most of your weight on the REAR of the bike, front just skims along,
You are carving/steering with rear.
#4 Stay on throttle, keep a good 30mph speed, keep that front wheel light.
#5 grip tank with knees and don't freak when bike pivots Left to Right.

It took me a few rides but gets easy when you change up your riding style.

Hoosier gets to ride in California for a day!

Recently I learned that I would be traveling to California for work. Due to the lack of flights available to the San Jose area at the time I would be arriving on a Monday around 9AM CA time with the remainder of the day free. My wife suggests site seeing, but I wanted no part of driving a compact rental car around by myself looking at the ocean and mountains… but, if I were on a motorcycle…
So, I checked a few websites looking for a motorcycle to rent for the day. There were tons of places offering Harleys for rent, but not much beyond that. Everything was approx. $150/day plus around $2k damage deposits, plus etc….
Then, my next thought was ADVrider! I posted on the West Region my situation and where I’d be on what day. Within a couple of days, I had an offer! jraugie1 offered his loaded DRZ400S for the day, GPS included! A few PMs back and forth and I was set!
Following is what was waiting on my when I pulled into his driveway.

How cool is that? Jim had his DRZ gassed and ready to go for me! A few co-workers thought I was nuts and may never return from the mountains after going to meet someone online I’d never met. They obviously aren’t familiar with advrider.com!
After talking to Jim for a short bit and him giving me some pointers on where I may want to go I was off and running! In the redwood mountain forests of California on a DRZ400S! Again, how cool is that?
The road I began on was a very tight twisty road.

I headed west with the intent of hitting mountain roads and eventually finding the Pacific Ocean. Even with Jim’s directions, maps onboard and a GPS under my nose, I still managed to veer off the course I had initially planned…but I was riding a cycle in the mountains, who cares? I was on roads like these a lot of the way.

Eventually, I stumbled across Alice’s Restaurant. According to Jim, this is a popular spot for bikes on the weekends. I was there on a Monday afternoon wanting to ride not eat, so I snapped a picture and continued on towards the ocean.

On the way to the ocean, I saw a few more scenic views.

Finally, there it was the Pacific Ocean. This was about way between San Francisco and Santa Cruz where Highway 84 meets Highway 1. Highway 1 runs right along the ocean, so I followed it into Santa Cruz.

After following Highway 1 into Santa Cruz, I meandered my way back to return the bike…
Thanks, again to jraugie1 who showed a ton of generosity to a guy from Indiana that he’d never met before. Definitely one of the best rides of my life … so far.

I want alot of things....

The DRZ was the perfect bike for the day. It is a fun bike. Maybe light for the open highway and heavy for tight woods, but definitely a fun bike that can do it all well.

WOW what a great hook-up. I've ridden those same roads when going to the Moto GP race the first year it returned to the US. Fortunately I did it on my own bike and rode from Indy to California, which was awesome in it's self.

Thanks to the ADV community there is always an opportunity.

Ill tell you. The hospitality on this site is amazing. I got a flat over the weekend and post in west michigan thread on a good shop. Got several good answers and one of the guys even was going to give me a tire to get me home although it was a bit off size and what not. I ended up just getting a new rear from the bmw dealership $$$ because i wouldnt have made it to where he lived before filling it up 8 times.
