Oh it goes through alright, at least it did 7 years ago and let me tell you its one rough ass decent. On our annual camping trip, we stumbled across that trail thanks to my DeLorme Gazetteer and followed it all the way down in the wifey's Durango. Fatdog was pretty much resigned to the fact we were going to have to abandon it, take the insurance loss and face the music back home. We made it but it was touch and go, I mean it was literally teetering on two points of contact in several places as we the crawled rock to rock down. Was an amazing testament to what that Durango was capable of.

New Tag...

This morning I rode to where I wanted to place the new tag, but where the trail started was a big "Posted, Private Property" sign.

So in the interest of keeping the game moving on these beautiful spring days, I thought of this place and how this it the prettiest time of the year to go there:

In Blount County, it's not far from a previous tag at the Chamblee Mill Road bridge. It's an easy trail that any dual sport and probably many street bikes could do. It's also a great place to have lunch or maybe an adult beverage.

Here's the GPS data:

And a short video starting at the old bridge:

New Tag...

This tag is located in Marshall County. In dry conditions the tag could probably be had on most street bikes. Right now it's a dual-sport tag. You will get wet getting this one especially if it's rained within the last week.

I know where that is at. I was over there a couple of weeks ago looking for the Long Branch Opry building. Sad story. Even the barn is gone.

Although I never personally went to L.B. Opry, I knew several people who did and really enjoyed it. I didn't realize that the barn was now gone.

New Tag...

This afternoon Bart Jones and I visited the Bradford Textile Factory ruins.

This is all that remains of a 4-story granite water-powered textile mill dating to before the Civil War in Coosa County. John Bradford, who was one of Andy Jackson's officers from Tennessee, received a land grant after the Alabama Territory was opened up following the defeat of the Red Sticks at Horseshoe Bend. He moved his entire operation, including employees and slaves, to this area and at one time in addition to the mill also operated a gold mine on his land as well as other business interests and a large farming operation.

I did a newspaper piece about Bradford and the mill (everyone called it the "Bradford Factory") back in the 1970s and the Alabama Historical Commission had census data on how many bolts of fabric were made at the mill for the 1830s, 1840s, 1850s, 1860s, etc. They told me cloth for confederate uniforms was one product made here. It's one of the few old mills I've seen in Alabama with stone ruins and I think it's quite picturesque. It seems like when I did the story they told me the stone was quarried over 20 miles away in Rockford and hauled to the site. Quite an undertaking I imagine!

The property itself is now posted, but these photos were made from a public road.

Obligatory shot with bike in frame:

More detailed view of the ruins (the stone water race that supplied a huge water wheel can be seen at lower right in picture):

New Tag

The new tag will be the south side of the old store in Buffalo on 431 if anyone wants to get a head start. Pic in a couple hours. I'm off to try to snag the Georgia tag
