Son's XR80R project

My son has outgrown his PW50 and has been wanting a bigger bike. More like one "Just like Dad's". So I came accross a 94' XR80R. Small version of my 94' XR650L. I picked up cheap knowing that I will have to put some time and money into if before his birthday in April. So I brought it home and told him it was someone elses and I was working on it for them. Big frown and a sigh and he went back inside.
Tonight I started on the tear down and inspection.

My daughter got into teating it down.

This is what happened when my back was turned.

The rear shock link bushings had been replaced with SPARK PLUG BOOTS. No Shit.

Now for cleaning, painting and buying parts.

If anyone has a line on cheap parts for these bikes let me know. I'm trying to do this with no budget.

It did however survive a fall out of a riding jacket, at 60mph, remember.

You know the 650 engine will fit in the frame without too much mods

You wonder what happened when you turned your back on your daughter??? I'll tell you what happened, She's your kid and she had access to tools. She took it apart to see what she could improve on it. She's your daughter, remember

My three boys are close together in age, and when they were little, anytime something mechanical was ready for the junkyard, I would give them the toolbox and let them take it apart to how it worked, toasters, lawnmowers, whatever. Well, I had this 1969 volkswagen in perfect shape, One day I was fooling around in the basement and they were all hunched down around the engine, I asked them what they were doing, naturally they said "nothing.". I figured they were just looking at the engine. Next time I came around the carburetor was on the floor and they were all wrestling to get something else off. Gotta watch em.

Man, you're gonna supprise the crap out of him with that!

On the other hand, man, just think of the fun you and your son could have (and how much he could learn from you) working together rebuilding that bike.

Keep it up.

Ray,

Just south of the Hoke Correctional Unit in McCain is a bike boneyard. You might check there for some used stuff.

PM sent.

Rear suspension linkage is on the way for the beast. Bank is busted now. Time for some side jobs and OT to help fund the rest. Wish me luck it has to be done by April 4th.
