I can load pics now.

I got the painted exhaust on but need to work on the heat shield to make it fit better. All the plastics arrived. I installed the front and rear fenders along with the front number plate. Mounted the new front brake cable holders and put on the right side panel. I tried to remove the spark arrestor screen from the air fliter housing and the end cap fell off. CRAP! I will try to find a suitable epoxy to put it back together then install the new fliter foam and side panel. When the axles come in all that will be left to buy is the seat foam and cover, the tank cover, a sprocket and chain set. I just might get this thing done before his birthday.

Well I stopped by the store today and picked up the epoxy to fix the air fliter housing. The old white epoxy was a bitch to clean off but it made the repair alot better.

Old white epoxy that is still on the other end

newly repaired end cap.

Ready to install.

I will put the foam on it and get it back in the air box, install the side cover.

I will get the bars and controls installed next. By then I hope to have both axles and the chain & sprockets in so I can have a rolling bike before the end of the month. Once all that is done I will try to get the cash up for the seat repairs.
Carter has even forgot the bike is in the garage.

Man I am loving the bike! I still can remember my first bike, a little kawasaki 4 stroke and my dad basically did the same thing you are doing! Your son will never forget this gift!

Leget - Not to hijack the thread but you mentioned you had a few project bikes laying around? I would love to get my hands on a project bike and just have it to curse at and sweat on..

Not much to look at but I did get some stuff done. Installed the Renthal bars and Scott grips. Finished up all the controls and cables. Put in the new air filter foam and repaired filter cage. Put on the side panel. Installed the new chain and sprockets. All that is left is the axles, seat and tank cover. It is looking like the tank cover will not be on by his birthday. I need to find a seat foam. OEM does not sell just the foam but the entire seat $$$$. XR's Only has a foam but it is $55. I found a seat cover for $25 on Flea Bay so I have that "Covered" (pun intended).

Here are 2 pic's but not much to look at.
Renthal bars and controls.

Chain, sprockets and side cover.

Well the rear axle finally arrived yesterday. Since I'm home with 2 sick kids and wife I felt the need to install it. So the rear wheel is all buttoned up, chain adjusted and brakes hooked up.

Still waiting on the front one to arrive. Not sure if I will have the seat done in time. I hope though.

Well the seat cover is offically ordered off E-Bay. I have a line on a seat with a good foam in Maine but have not hear back from him yet.
His birthday is on 4/8 but the wife wants to have a party/dinner on 4/5 pushing up the delivery date. Crap. I needed the extra days for sure now. I still have to put the seat together when the stuff arrives.

I have been conciedering painting the tank just until I get the tank cover later on. The ugly tan tank just makes the bike look bad IMO. I might buy a can of Fusion paint and coat it for the birthday reveal. We shall see.

Ok the tank is temporily painted until we get the cover ordered and installed. New fuel line installed, and the tank put back on the bike. Looks good from 10 feet away. Paint cannot cover the cuts and gouges in the plastic tank. OH well it is white and thats what we were looking for just to get us by.

before:

after:

All that is left is the seat.

Well the front axle came in today and was quickly installed. Hooked up the brakes and took it down the street for a test run. Not a power house by any means but it will do until he gets good at riding it then the power mods begin. Still need to adjust more on the brakes but fine for now.
Anyway, I went inside to get a drink and came out to see this and had to snap a picture.

BUSTED!

I yelled "What are you doing sitting on that bike" he replied " I just wanted to see if I fit it yet and I really like it" I told him to save his money and we could see about matching the cash, to get one of his own.

Sometimes it is just fun to trick your kids!!

Dude thats so awsome! My dad was a trickster like you. It made some awsome home video's and memories. If I can get my first bike video converted to dvd I'll post it up. It was hilarious. You got a lucky son. Great project.
