1700 Miles to Chickfest!

The moment I caught word of a massive chick dirtbiker meetup, I knew I had to do everything in my power to attend. Google maps had it at about a 700 mile long journey from Tucson, Arizona to Central Colorado, but unwilling to do anything the simplest way, Sean and I decided to extend the trip to Chickfest into a 9 day journey encompassing some of the best roads and National Parks in Arizona, Utah and Colorado.

He plotted our trip out and loaded the tracks into his gps, declaring he had found another 1000 miles between here and Colorado! Sounds awesome, let's ride!

We unfortunately put off packing until the morning of departure and started our trip off all wrong, chaotically throwing things together and hoping we didn't forget anything important. Finally we were ready to leave!

My DR-Zebra heaped with supplies

After turning back once for a few crucial forgotten items, we were actually ready to get out of town! At this point it was almost noon and -hot-. We had a long ride ahead of us to Alpine, where would camp for the night.

Filling up at the 'last chance Circle K' we saw other bikes out touring for the summer.

We stopped at an old abandon gas station to grab some Dairy Queen and tighten the bolt on my exhaust pipe (I swear this thing is the bane of my existence).

Finally we hit the good stuff!

Hwy 191 used to be Hwy 666, The Devil's Highway, due to the many casualties on its killer turns through the mountains, until people decided that was too morbid and renamed it. It doesn't stop people from careening off into the canyon however.

Yes, we have forests in Arizona!

The sun started going down, but we were booking it to Luna Lake for camping. The wildlife comes out when the sun goes down and Sean nearly hit a bear and a flock of wild turkey! Of course I didn't catch either on film or video. :/

Luna Lake at last!

To be continued...

In my defense I went to Canada after Chickfest and was on the road for two months...but yeah I've been back for a month now and I should probably be a little further along than this. My apologies for the tardiness! It was an incredible time and I met some very cool chicks!

Monkey Butt is a Real Problem!

Here's a map of the route we took:

We camped out in Alpine and woke up early the next morning. The first couple nights camping are always a little rough until your body gets used to it. We packed up camp and reloaded the bikes quickly for an early start to visit Sean's parents in Phoenix.

Riding through the desert. There actually were many pretty places to take pictures of, but no where to safely stop.

It should be noted that DRZs aren't the best bikes for long distance runs. usually when I ride I'm out on the dirt standing most of the time. Thankfully I have a dished Corbin seat on my bike, which is way better than the stock 2x4 torture device that comes on it...however, after two 300+ mile days in a row I was begging for mercy. I won't go into gory detail (and no, I don't have pictures), but Sean's mother gave me a pair of bicycle shorts with cushions in the rear to help ease my suffering. I am definitely ordering a sheepskin butt pad for my next trip!

We had a nice time visiting with his family and sleeping on real beds before heading North to visit friends in Flagstaff. We took a great route through Prescott, Jerome and Sedona.

This is why Arizona has a whole magazine devoted to its highways!

Prescott

Sean taking a break.

On the way to Jerome.

Jerome is a great hippie/artist town popular with bikes!

most of which were far shinier than ours...

This seat made me laugh.

Jerome brothel

I love the desert.

Sedona is extremely, painfully, touristy...but it has awesome rocks!

I pulled over to take the above pictures and Sean saw and stopped a little further off the turn off. When we got back on the bikes, he tried to go again, not realizing the bike was still in second gear. This of course made is stall and an unfortunate habit of KLRs is that they lunge forward hard when they stall...well, being on an off camber bit of slab, he couldn't regain his footing and the bike plopped over, head downhill, into the road. We were struggling to right it, but it was damned heavy all loaded up like that. Finally some Harley riders stopped and helped us pick it up. They were super nice and one lady exclaimed, "I've been there!". I know riders like to hassle each other over bike choices, but I have to say, I was helped out by every kind of biker on this trip and wholeheartedly accept anyone who rides as part of the family.

I sang this song to myself while riding through town.
Havalina - Pixies

We arrived in Flagstaff and had a pleasant evening with our friends Jack and Adele, who decided to join us the next day to check out the Grand Canyon!

Grand Canyon

I'm not sure what I can say about the Grand Canyon that hasn't already been said. It's so massive it doesn't even seem real. You take hundreds of photos in an attempt to capture it and you can never come close. All I can do is suggest you go there and see it for yourself...and post a few of the better pictures to give you some idea how vast and beautiful this place is.

Don't look down!

Squirrel

Somebody made the mistake of feeding him M&Ms and he was positively crazed for more.

He seems to think my camera is edible.

Next time I come I am riding/hiking/canoeing down into the canyon for sure.

The very cool looking atmospheric effect is unfortunately pollution. :(

We camped in the park and this deer was just outside our tent in the morning. :3

Then we headed off towards Zion National Park...
