Riding Partner(s) Sought -- AK to Oaxaca, Summer 2009
Departing Fairbanks, Alaska for Oaxaca, Mexico after the AK Highway dries out this summer. Plan on camping mostly, with occasional motel stays. Taking my time. Flexible on dates.
Seeking riding partner, particularly for Mexico leg. Taking Spanish classes this spring, then ultimately in Oaxaca... so it'd be nice if you knew more. Otherwise, gumption, grit, and common sense should be enough... I hope. Interested? Got tips? Let's talk. Send an email. Thanks. awashed screwed with this post 01-15-2009 at 11:19 PM |

Sounds like a great trip, especially with the dollar strong against the peso. If you have a riding partner or two, hotels may be the way to go in Mexico. Having said that I always like to have camping gear just in case you find that great camping spot or a motel is not available. I'm interested, as I have june, july and half of august off. I'm off in March for Copper Canyon and have ridden to Mazatlan--no problems. Post some prospective dates and I'm sure you will get some responses. Keep us posted on your plans.

I am partial to crossing south of Tucson. It's a smaller, comfortable town for staging, there's a Suzuki shop there to do a check-up on my bike -- DL650 -- (I'll be coming from Alaska, so will want some tires), and away from larger, possibly more troublesome Mexican border towns. From Alaska, I will be traveling the coast and cut east before Los Angeles. Want to visit a friend in San Francisco.
As for timing, it seems August will be my best bet for departing Alaska... the weather here can be inclement into July, especially in the mountains. Besides, summer in Alaska is heavenly -- better than the few weeks of -50s and -40s that we experienced here recently. In any case, this would put me in Tucson around the third or fourth week of August. Writing this, it becomes obvious how difficult coordinating with anyone is this far out... maybe to the point of being ridiculous. Still, it's exciting to sketch the trip and see if there're some good fits in terms of riding partners. ManitouMike: It seems my dates are a bit late for you. You make a good point with respect to motels in Mexico. There's a lot of excellent advice on the board... it's hard to absorb it all. homelessbiker: What range of dates are you considering? Why Mexico for you? awashed screwed with this post 01-17-2009 at 08:28 PM |
