Bump

Do you guys have any new info as to why this is happening?
Been toying with the idea of picking up one of these bikes but this 3rd gear thing has me a bit nervous...

About three years ago I went on an all day dual-sport ride with about 25 guys of various makes but one didn't make it back under it's own power; a DR650. Transmission failure.
I'll see if I can find out what year, mileage etc. and report back.

Funny, funny. I have done a dr650 3rd gear fix, and two KLR650 3rd gear fixes. Must be large ds riders

I hate to ruin the flow of this disaster thread, but........ How about the guys with DR's that have gone 40,50, or 60,000 miles with out so much as a fart out of their DR's? Maybe compare that to how many have catastrophicly blown their guts all over the countryside maiming small children and igniting forest fires with the wreckage.

So check in if your one of the lucky few who has a reliable DR.
Mine runs better with no funny noises at 21,000 miles then it did at 12,000.
I do hammer it kinda hard and may have a check done on the oil to see what kind of particulates are floating around in there.

I think I'll just wait and see how this plays out. If this turns out to be a low miles '08 then '09 is probably the same (i.e. no new gear really, just a part# change)
This thread is whats known as site hype, some people crowing over a small percentage of bikes that blew up,every bike made has a problem some where, KLR's have been sucking oil and having doohickeys exploding their motors into fragments for years, people still ride em around the world and love em. So few DR's compared to the amount sold have a problem that its not a reason to avoid one.

In marketing research it has been generally agreed that people are 12 times more likely to pass on negative news than positive so for every blow up there are possibly 12 bikes going strong well into the very high mileage territory but too content to be bothered to brag/post about it. I ride mine places I probably shouldn't and don't give it a second thought. I'm well over 20K miles.

I have 53,000 on my 2006 and it still runs great. The rivets on the clutch basket did loosen up around 45,000 so I had to replace it, but all is good now.

Given the numbers I have seen here, I would not label this issue as "Probable" with ownership.
From my own personal experience:
1986 XR600 - Shattered 3rd gear. No other damage. Limped home, stuck in 4th. XR's only "beefed up" 3rd gear set installed. The 85-86 bikes were well known for this.
1997 KTM RXC620 - Shattered flywheel. No apparent reason. Expensive! There have been several reported cases of this problem, similar in frequency to the DR 3rd gear issue.
2000 DRZ400S - Damaged/compressed 2nd gear bushing. Inexpensive, but difficult to fix. These bikes are known for this fault.
Mnay bikes have an Achilles Heel, and if you are one of those who happen to experience it, it is no small matter. The DR 3rd gear issue does not seem to be frequent enough to be classified as such, but to those who have experienced it, I am sure that it is catastrophic.

It would suck to have my DR scatter, but Id find another good lightly used one for cheap and combine the parts to make another good DR,the rebuilding looks to be way too expensive.

Add one more to the list

Looks like mine bought it this past weekend. Motor went silent and the rear wheel locked just as I was ready to shift to 4th. Motor wont spin and the bike won't roll in anything but neutral, clutch in or out.

So, is this the end of my motor? Just too expensive to repair? I LOVE the bike but don't want to spend thousands to repair a bike worth $2500. It's a US '02 with 13K miles.

You'll need to open it up to be sure but it doesn't sound good.

If you get another DR you'll have a lot of spare parts

+1. Buy another DR and you've now got a complete spare set of wheels etc. along with whatever other parts you added. Pipe, Carb seat whatever. It's my plan when / if mine ever goes.
