I'm cleaning out the garage. Anyone want or need 2 Happy Trails panniers? They were on Petes bike when he hit a deer. They are bent and twisted. I used to have HT panniers and so I grabbed them for the spare mounts, hinges, etc. Could someone salvage them and make them use able again? Note sure, maybe if they got creative

Free if you come pick them up, otherwise they're going to the dump....

I almost broke down and called you, Ted, to borrow that tool. Our friend from Newfoundland who bought the 690 got an extra set of dirt wheels with it which were still here at our place after he rode the SM wheeled bike home. I promised to send the extra parts including the wheels but unfortunately the wheels were shod with a pair of Pirelli MX tires with ice racing screws in them. The back wheel weighed about 75 pounds (estimated) and he really had no need for the tires so they had to come off first.

That back tire was the toughest I've ever tackled. I got the bead off the edge of the rim but the whole thing was so stiff I couldn't get it to sit in the trough while I levered the other side.

So I came up with the idea of cutting up some small blocks of hardwood and used those to hold the tire away from the edge of the rim.

It worked! Still a tough tire to remove but at least it was now possible. Getting the second side of the tire off the rim proved too much for my measly 12" tire irons. I just could not pull the tire down far enough to get the rubber mallet to work its magic the rest of the way so I looked around and found a very old tire iron which did prove strong enough.

Now, I need a beer!
