The question relates to the kickstand on the XL. When it is down, it leans so far over that there isn't a hope I would use it without sticking a 4x4 under it. My XR however stands upright, but it appears as though someone has welded an insert into the shaft of the kickstand. I assume that the kickstand is just bent as it looks original including the rubber tab that sticks out at the bottom. Can I ask someone how long this thing is supposed to be? Sorry for the daft question, but I can't be shleping a 4X4 wherever I go - rugged perhaps but goofy definately. Cheers!
Is the top of the kickstand spread too wide and loose to stand up enough? Or is the bolt or hole worn and loose. The stand and/or the mount may be bent from someone kickstarting the bike on the kickstand.

Just found the owners manual under the right side side cover.

Just over 2000 miles on it when I got it a decade ago; my sister said the kids were crawling all over it and she wanted it out. Now they are all 6'7" monster who sack the suspension just sitting on it. They think KLR650s are play things.

I'm looking forward to the little thumper coming to life tonight or tomorrow.
You know the rules! no pics - it never happened!

Inquiring minds want to know (see).

My old XL leaned a lot too. Look how far the kickstand is out compared to the stand on the KLX.

So I tried to read/scan through this great thread and I did a search and I'm not finding a whole lot. Has anyone done anything to upgrade the headlight on a 1982 XL 250 to make it brighter but keep the stock look? Just try a different bulb?? Thanks in advance!

Mine is a 6 volt. There's not much you can do with that other keep the bike in a good state of tune with a hot battery.

You might look to the bicycle world. They have some wicked bright LED lights that have their own rechargeable batteries. Get some industrial Velcro to hold the battery and light - and poof, let there be LIGHT!

Everything I am finding in my bike is 12v? The battery in it currently is 12v. The headlight in it is 12v. Is something different about mine? Seems like everything I have been reading in forums is it should be 6v??

Some have upgraded the electrics to 12v. Have stator rewound, change all light bulbs, RR and coil to 12 Volt. May need to watch wattage on headlight so wiring does not melt.

I am keeping mine block stock. New 6 volt with proper attachments (it's way cool) for all of $28. I could use another 6 volt but I would have to cut the original wiring harness. Nope.

Supposed to show up today; no joy. No matter. I won't be cognizant until sometime Wednesday afternoon.

Fresh gas, a new battery, and once I inspect the spark plug... we should have a nice easy thumpa-thumpa-thumpa in the garage soon.

Mine is totally stock, only missing the battery side cover. Can't seem to find one! Also looking for a new front fender only because the previous owners dog chewed on one corner a bit. Only 6700 miles, I have had this bike since I was 14, first bike I ever rode on the street, still riding it today! I'm 32 now! Best/most fun bike I have ever owned! I will post pictures tonight.

According to some online websites when I looked up the specs for the 1982 XL 250, that is when they changed to 12v.
