GF's relatives that live there warn me that building permits are very expensive to build a garage. For comparison, I built a 30' x 40' garage in a small town in MN and the permit was less than $300.
Also, some ads mention some houses have rooms or additions that "weren't permitted". What are the consequences?
Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.
Minnjim, Just hit up the SE (Vail, Corona de Tucson, etc) Regardless of your political leanings, you don't pay the ridiculous 5+% Tucson additional sales tax (just the county ~4.5%) when you order online from places that collect tax. Property tax is a bit rough down here (over half of it goes to the Vail school district). Definitely stay out of the city limits. They are expanding the main road from Tucson to down here soon(ish) so the morning commute will get better. My wife teaches at UofA and it takes her about 35 minutes to get to work in the morning. I rode the motorcycle, so just a little less time to get to work.
Oh, prices are easier to swallow than the stuff in NE. Not that the area isn't worth it (I wish I could have afforded a place there), but you can get similar living for less. And the area should continue growing. There is a hospital zoned to go in near Rita Ranch and supposedly a mall will eventually be built down this way.

Sadly the city tax has shot up to around 9 percent. It makes buying anything expensive within the city limits rather painful, but it is what it is.

Saturday August 27 Ride

Santa Rita's ride.

Stage at end of South Wilmont (dirt road). Ready to ride at 8:30AM. Beautiful ride up over Gunsight Pass. Over to Gardner Canyon Road, do a short single track up to the ridge down into a couple canyons. See how everyone's gas is as to whether we go over to Sonoita or not. Then back over the Gap and back to the trucks. Probably a 6 hour ride but should be somewhat cooler up there and some great scenery.

Yes...vehicles can be left here. Wilmont dead-ends at the staging area...you can't miss it. There is a big gate there, but unless you have a state trust pass on your vehicle park across the street.

My morning ride through Grand Teton and through Yellowstone parks. Started out this morning at cold and wet at 48 degrees.
