Any AZ area riders familiar with title laws in AZ?

The story is this, I acquired a CRF50 in a trade for a new Arai a few years ago ('07). FL doesn't require titles for off-road bikes, so this bike did not have one (I doubt this bike ever had a title, purchased in FL the MSO probably went in the garbage a week after the bike got home). Now I'm in Tucson, and I'd like to sell my 50, but I need to figure out how to get a title for it. Bonded title? Lost Title? Abandoned title? Any help or info would be appreciated.

I'll probably swing by the MVD tomorrow, but I figured I'd ask here first.

If you know anyone in Colorado, and they can give you a bill of sale, that's notarized, then AZ will give you a title, as Co doesn't require a title for off road bikes. FL may be the same, not sure. I registered my 1997 trials bike a few years ago, and had a Co bill of sale, real easy...

Bonded title will cost about $200 and take up to 6-8 weeks.

Cliff Notes version:

It's a CRF50... sell the fucking thing without a title!

If you use a title company. If you do it yourself through the mvd it takes 6-8 weeks, some organization, and a certified letter (5 dollars) and a bond (50 from mike pierce insurance).

If there is no previous owner within a certain amount of years (most likely in your case) you skip the 6-8 week waiting time and go straight to a bond.

It's a CRF50. The average retail (per the NADA guide) is $675... I don't think you'll have a problem selling it without a title.

Funny thing is I have a guy who wants to buy it, but he said not without a title.

He has a DRZ for sale, maybe I'll take the time to get the bonded title and save up some cash and trade him.

Help me with your way, I may need to do it soon. My past experiences have been through AZ Auto License (a DMV contract outfit).

What do you mean by, and how is it determined "no previous owner"?

Thanks,

John

Just so you know upfront I'm not an expert or anything, I've just done it once and I'm listening in on my roomate who is doing it on two of his bikes.

I think it's something like 7 years of no past ownership, but I'm not sure on that exact number. Basically if it's been that long since somebody has filed a title with the mvd, they don't make you send the certified letter and you can go straight to the bond, as chances that whoever had it 7 years ago doesn't have the title anymore.

To get the bonded title the cheap way, through the mvd, just take the bike to the mvd, with any and all paperwork you have on the bike (usually a bill of sale). Then they will inspect the bike's vin and engine number to make sure nothing is stolen, then they'll give you all the steps you need to complete the bonded title process. They'll give you the address of whoever had the title last, and you'll send them a certified letter asking for the title. That's where the wait comes in. Depending on the result of that (usually no response) you take whatever you have to the mvd and they'll set the bond amount (based on the value of the bike), and you go and get a bond (I went through Mike Pierce Insurance, they have 50 dollar minimum, everyone else has 100 dollar minimum). Then take all that to the mvd and voila, you'll have a title.

The main thing with all this is to not lose any paperwork. So by sending out a letter yourself and visiting the mvd 3 times you'll save 100 bucks on what the title company charges you. I went to the mvd in green valley since they're not as busy as the one's in tucson, but that's just preference.

I went to the DMV today to plate my CRF 250X and asked the same question about the YZ 250F I bought with a bill of sale. They said to bring in the bike for a "level one" inspection and then they would tell me what else to do. The gal didn't seem to think it was that big a deal. One thing I heard, the less you tell them the better. If you give them a bunch of details they will make you follow-up on all of them which takes lots of time. For the most part, they want to get it done as quickly as you do.

Provide a bill of sale and they will have a title in very little time. Skip
