Spent my weekend helping clean up the desert. The AZ Game and Fish put together this annual project along with Pima County. This year we cleaned up two areas about 10 miles north of Aravaca Road, right at the southern edge of the Sierrita Mtns.

While everyone else slowly made their way to the sites in 4X4 pickups, I throughly enjoyed riding in.

There was an unbelievable amount of trash down in the washes. I have no idea how many bags we filled but there were two large industrial size roll-off dumpsters. Just the trash under this one tree....

... was enough to fill one large trash bag.

The vast majority was empty water bottles, followed closely by discarded clothing and empty back packs. I can see leaving an unneeded jacket but why just one child's cowboy boot, or a single man's slip-on dress shoe? My strangest find was a child's back pack.

While all the others were empty, this one obviously was stuffed full. The fabric was rotting so I simply tore it open. What ever was in there was fully wrapped in black plastic and taped closed . Don't want to know what that is so into the trash bag it goes without further inspection.

I mentioned that all the trash appeared to have been there quite some time. The cans were rusted and the clothing was rotting. I was told that the areas north of Aravaca Road tend to be older sites while those south of the road are more recent. The volunteer crews only work on the northern sites as it is too dangerous between Aravaca Road and the border. They use prison inmates to clean those areas .

No ADV report would be complete without the obligitory food picture. We all headed back to base camp for a wonderful BBQ lunch.

A beautiful weekend and I came away feeling it was a job well done.

Dave

Looks to me like you had the pleasure of cleaning up an illegal resting spot. Wasn't that nice of them to leave all that stuff there to give you something to do? I'd also be willing to bet the backpack was full of old weed. Should have checked and turned it in so it could have been documented and cremated properly.
By the way, a big thank you for helping clean some of that mess up.

Glad to hear you're getting your arm back - but we'll be in Mexico on Thursday, so no RG for us.

After work ride.......

Got out for a ride in Tucson's backyard today!

A couple of Snowbirds enjoying an afternoon in the sunshine.

Getting into the hills was nice but, seeing this badass was great!

These beautiful primal critters (and others) are being activated by the mid eighty degree afternoons.

Standing it's ground. it never hissed unlike most I have seen.

Heloderma suspectum (Gila Monster) sightings are a blessing for me, as are afternoon rides!

Just got back from a couple days riding in Moab. Very surrealistic landscape there.
